Where should I start them. I hate to admit it, but I'm from Canada and never gave these guys a listen until recently...heard a few songs and liked them....so I'm going down to my local record store today...should I just buy all three of their albums or start with one??

I agree...Just give each one a few listens before moving on. It took me a couple of listens to get into some of the songs. Enjoy!

Get all three. The beauty and mystery of these guys is, you can put all their records on your ipods playlist and hit shuffle and they fit seemlessly together, no matter what record the songs from, yet theyve never repeated themselves.

theyre an astonishingly great band who deserve your full attention for a couple of hours.

you'll be happy you gave it to them.

I like 'em but don't love 'em.

I do understand why some are crazy about them. To me, the albums are enjoyable enough and certainly interesting. But I'm definitely not someone who's doing back-flips over them.
  • All three albums are brilliant for their own reason, so, get all three.

All three are good but to answer your question i'd start at the begining and move from there.

Get Funeral, then Neon bible, then Suburbs
    Charlotte 00
    Charlotte 03
    Asheville 04
    Atlanta 12
    Greenville 16, Columbia 16
    Seattle 18
    Nashville 22
  • I recently discovered the greatness that is Arcade Fire...

I started with Funeral and love it. Immediately got their other 2 albums and EP. Can't wait to get a chance to check these guys out live.

Saw them in front of 101,000 in Montreal.

Now for my concert career, there's that show, and everything else. Nothing else comes remotely close to how great that was,

Now you gotta go and get Funeral. That's my personal favorite of the 3. 'Rebellion' is so good.
  • i love all 3 albums. but i think funeral may be their best. its fun to read some of the reviews from 2004/2005 from that album. alot of press reviewed it as some sort of religious document or something.

yeah, the more fans of arcade fire, the better as far as im concerned.

and it really is like reading steinbeck as your first exposure to books ever. or watching citizen kane or tree of life as your first exposure to films. its all downhill from there. seeing AF live, or hearing any of their albums, it sort of puts any other band you see or hear to shame, and you judge the other bands based on the brilliance of AF.

ive said this before, but if all thats remembered of the indie scene of the 2000's, if all that people recall is this one little band called Arcade fire, and their first album Funeral and their live show, I will be a happy camper

i said this in that thread you started but i'd pretty much make it top priority to see them live, spare no expense, or inconvenience. If you have the flu, go see them. If you sprained your ankle, go see them. If you have schoolwork to do, go see them.

they supposedly arent going to tour again until album 4 is out, and the funds are tight right now for me, but even if the show was 30 bucks or something and I had only 30 bucks left in my savings, i'd do it.

Whats amazing is the band really is peerless. Incredible writing and lyrics. Every single band member plays multiple instruments, and plays them damn well. they sound incredible on record and in studio. they sound stunning live. They create such amazing soundscapes.

i think they are one of those bands you will hear on the radio for the next couple decades and when we are 50 or 60, they will be playing AF songs on the classic indie rock station

i agree with you. i got back from both shows i saw them at, a couple years apart, and both times it was such a shot of adrenaline. i dont do drugs or drink, but i imagine thats the kind of high you get from those substances, only i felt it as a straightedger. its what music is supposed to do, make you feel something.

plus they play live like its their last show, every time. And i think half the fun is the communal feeling the shows create, every single person is screaming every single word for every single song. They want you to join in. I felt that way seeing them with a crowd of maybe 3 or 4,000 both shows, i cant imagine what Wake up or Power Out or Rebellion would sound like, or what the crowd would sound like with a show of 101,000. insane

Ok so after listening to both The Suburbs and Neon Bible at least three times each, I can say The Suburbs is my favorite so far. Neon Bible is great though. This band just sounds so different then anything else out there, thats why they are so good.

  • there is an EP from 2003, 7 songs, including a first version of No cars go, midtempo, and if you are into vinyl you can get 7" singles from their store, specially Power out (live) b/w This must be the place (Naive Melody) (live) (feat. David Byrne) and the 7" split, Side A LCD Soundsystem's No love lost- Side B Arcade Fire's Poupee de cire, poupee de son.

Also, you can find their stuff at http://www.mergerecords.com you can get that EP there, plus the 7" singles from Neon bible, the first AF Merge records 7" Cold wind b/w Brazil, this is before Neon Bible... if you loved The Sububrs, the Deluxe Edition CD/DVD is a must, 2 extra songs, Culture War and Speaking in tongues also with David Byrne, if you get this edition, these two songs will be emailed to you via a download code, and when you receive the CD you get a coupon for downloading Ready to start (Damian Taylor mix) and Sprawl I (demo)...

by the way, Sprawl II won a prize in Canada, don't know which one, for that reason it was released on a split 7", don't know who is the other artist or how many copies were pressed; there are 1000 copies of a one sided 7" for We used to wait, released in Europe. Before The Suburbs was released, the song was released as a promo b/w Month of may,and Tunnels, first song from Funeral was released on a 7" b/w My buddy (by Albino Rey, Win and Will's grandpa), My buddy is also the B side for Laika (from Funeral also) but there are only 1500 copies for Tunnels 7", or 150, never knew which was correct. For these, you should try the bay.

I miss this band. Sounds like they are working on a new album. Wouldn't surprise me at all if they just released a new album out of nowhere....that seems to be the new thing these days.
  • Yeah where are these guys? Reflecktor was awesome. Need to hear the follow up and if still never seen them live. I also regret not seeing them in NY around '05 when they were playing a church.
