Do you guys like dubstep?
I've just recently been getting into it and I was hoping you could recommend some good songs/artists. I basically just know Skrillex haha

james blake had a minimalist, just him, some beats, and his voice, and it was one of my top records of 2011.
the xx, a band from 2009, they have many elements going on, but they certainly blend dubstep with indie and r and b and are amazing
Jamie XX collab album with Gil Scott Heron
mount kimbie
SBTRKT
i'd say some of the cream of the crop, would be Aphex twin, that guys a legend.
newerish guys like Four Tet, really intricate gorgeous sounding beats.
Burial-this guy warps, time and pitch shifts newer r and b samples, then drops an out of the world beat behind it, very UK ish, sound has been described as the sound of london, at midnight, when its raining
and although not dubstep absolutely, Flying Lotus, the great nephew of John Coltrane, is doing some insane stuff with avantegarde, abstract, electronic soundscapes.
and then sort of the more advanced musically and more abstract sounding UK sounds i described above.
like indie the term dubstep is sort of all encompassing, and its difficult to completely define exactly what it means or what it sounds or looks like.
james blake and skrillex, or mount kimbie and skrillex are completely different entities

I'm with this person. What is dubstep?
there are two strains. the american, commercial kind, which is evidenced by skrillex. party music. music to dance to.
the other kind is the more experimental and i view more satisfying sound and version. this is a UK strain, evidenced by burial, james blake, aphex twin, the xx, mount kimbie, and to some degree flying lotus. this is more focused on experimentation, on creating melodies and cool sounds. pushing the boundaries.
You really have to listen to it though. Skrillex and the american dubstep scene is vastly different than the UK scene.
has the OP given a listen to any of the artists, either american or UK? Whats the verdict?

Oh and someone should really tell him the early 90s are over . All he needs are a few facial piercings and he literally could have stepped right out of 1994.
Well, now I know what my least-favorite music genre is. Sorry, Ranchero music, there is a new leader in the clubhouse.
SBTRKT - loving the self titled album right now. more like dubstep/hip hop...its been playing on my ipod non stop since i found it a few weeks ago!! Highly recommend this one, even if your not big into dubstep.
Feed Me - Check out Feed Me's Big Adventure & To The Stars EP. Both killer. The newest one, Feed Me's Escape From Electric Mountain isnt hitting me as much as the first two, but its still fresh so maybe i'll come around.
JUSTICE - good stuff right there. love that funky bass
There is more to dubstep than Skrillex
Porter Robinson
Nicky Romero
Deadmau5's show is very is good, although I think the total experience is a bit long when you add in all the openers. The show we went to in September had 3 openers and it was 5+ hours long which can be too much EDM especially when you're stuck in your seat at the HOB, would have been better in an arena or outdoor setting.
SBTRKT we're seeing at Lolla in a few weeks. My son is psyched about this show, although he says SBTRKT is more ambient music than most other EDM out there.
Feed Me was OK, I found his show entertaining but it was very repetitive. IMO Excision was the better of the 3 openers for Deadmau5.
Justice is THE show my son is anticipating the most at Lolla and after listening to them I have to say I'm pretty pumped for it too! Husband will be over at Jack White during this one but I'd rather see JW in a small club setting and Justice out in the open under the Chicago skyline so I'll be hanging out with my son for this set
Love Bassnectar and Zed's Dead, wish the Lolla schedule wasn't so conflict ridden or we would be seeing both of them. We'll see how things play out and maybe we'll skip out on our other planned shows and catch one or both of them.
Will report back on the live shows of SBTRKT and Justice (definitely) and Bassnectar and/or Zed's Dead (possibly) in a few weeks after the fest

I saw Deadmau5 in an arena in Hartford (where PJ played in 2010). Shit was awesome. I had never heard any Feed Me before that show and really enjoyed it. Love Feed Me now. Excision was good too - I'll be seeing him again at ID Festival in July, tho its not something that I feel the need to listen to regularly. A little too industrial sounding for me sometimes.
I saw Justice at HOB in Boston. Show was great, tho I was a little disappointed at the length of the show. Really felt like it could have been longer.
If your into EDM you should check out Identify Festival. http://idfestival.com/ They're going to places across the states. Eric Prydz is the main headline, but Im mostly excited about Wolfgang Gartner. They keep adding more people...different line up at all the shows. Really wishing Nero, Porter Robinson and/or Hardwell would get added to the MA show tho... but the tix were cheap. $40 and I think thats worth the price to see any one of those artists on their own.

Me neither.. :fp: Is it basically just electronic music?
Yup..imagine your iPod skipping, and throw in digital static...now make a beat out it, then crank the low end and you have Dubstep.
I catch my kid listening to it every now and then which promptly creates a good debate as to the merits of quality music and what a cantankerous, cagey, old critic might term 'junk'.
He's got really good taste in music for a young dude and plays the guitar very well... so I have to admit that for him to listen to it... there must be something in it. I just haven't figured out what that quality might be?
It seems as if this genre of music is more like background noise at traffic lights than anything which might inspire the soul.
Temper what I say though. It was I that made fun of the guys who listened to Michael Jackson, Madonna, Lionel Ritchie, Men Without Hats, and others in the early 80s as I was throwing their tapes out of the stereo and replacing them with Tattoo You and Zeppelin II. I may just be a musical buffoon with much too narrow or scope of influence.
