And is it really the Beach Boys without John Stamos?
That's how it should be billed. The Beach Boys without John Stamos.

His history with the band according to his wiki...He says is in for the tour, so watch the fuck out Bonnaroo!!! You're about to get Stamos-ed.
"Stamos, who is proficient at the drums, keyboards, guitar, bass and various percussion instruments, has occasionally performed with The Beach Boys, dating back to the 1980s. In 1988, he appeared in their video for "Kokomo," in which he played the conga steel drums. In 1990, he played drums for them on the title track of the comedy Problem Child.
In 1992, he sang lead vocals on a new version of "Forever" for their album Summer in Paradise. The song was originally written and sung by Beach Boy Dennis Wilson and released in 1970. The song was also featured twice on Full House. The first was a recording sung at his character's wedding, while the second was a recording sung for his character's twin sons. The 1992 music video, titled "Forever by Jesse and the Rippers", featured Stamos predominantly. Three of The Beach Boys members are however briefly shown singing harmonies with Stamos: Carl Wilson, Bruce Johnston, and Mike Love.
Since the 1990s, Stamos has regularly performed with The Beach Boys during their summer tours, playing drums and guitar, and singing some of their hit songs such as "Forever."[citation needed].
On the March 30, 2010 episode of ABC's Dancing with the Stars, Stamos appeared with them again, playing drums, congos, and guitar.
Stamos toured with The Beach Boys in the spring of 2010, including an appearance at Fort Myers, Florida.
In June 2011, Stamos performed with The Beach Boys at a benefit concert for the Terri Schiavo Life & Hope Network.
On January 13, 2012, John Stamos announced that he will also be performing with the Beach Boys for their 50th Anniversary Tour."
highlights of the lineup for me are the beach boys, black star, the roots, and the avett brothers.
no offense to rhcp, but talk about bonnaroo dropping the ball with them. people have been asking for the chilis at roo for years now, and it finally happens when frusciante has already left the band. a shame really. not saying they don't put on a good show with the current lineup, and i really couldn't attest to it either way as i haven't seen them...but they're certainly not as alluring as a headliner without john.
...a bit surprised to see radiohead and phish back as headliners. more so radiohead than phish. i love radiohead, but they already headlined back in '07. phish headlined two nights just 3 years ago. can't really complain about either of those bands though. radiohead is radiohead, and phish is a perfect crowd pleaser for bonnaroo.
i was half expecting to see adele headline bonnaroo this year. that would've been great, and maybe would've made me consider going. just have a feeling it's gonna be a tough ticket in the near future to see adele outside of a festival environment. much like a madonna or michael jackson. oh well.
i'm sure the festival will be a blast as usual for those who attend.
me? i'll be going to forecastle in lousiville this year, and i can't wait to see what that lineup looks like.
kind of interesting how every single festival essentially is playing to the same hipster and indie audience. Bumbershoot, Lolla, Coachella, Glastonbury, Sasquatch, South By, all are similar type bands and focus
I'm hitting Forecastle as well, especially as it is in my hometown . With MMJ, headlining and helping organize, it should be a pretty good line-up!
Seems my preconceptions are what should have been burned...

there's still quite a bit of roots music at bonnaroo. much more so than lolla and coachella. it's certainly changed drastically over the years, but that's gonna happen when more and more people come every year. they have an enormous audience to cater to....but i still see a lot of elements of the early jamband days of bonnaroo scattered throughout the lineup every year.
and having been to bonnaroo a couple times, including last year, i still think it's more of a hippie crowd than a hipster crowd, despite some of the recent lineups. especially in contrast to coachella which i also attended last year.
...as for coachella, by far the worst crowd i've ever been in for a festival/concert/event ever. i will never go back. not just because it was nothing but hipsters and rich kids, but because many of them were assholes. i feared for my life at the main stage when i attempted to camp out up front for an amazing saturday lineup of bands ending with arcade fire. needless to say i ended up watching arcade fire from 100 yards away.
bonnaroo on the other hand is a great festival regardless of who is on the bill. besides the heat, it's a great environment, incredibly well run, and everyone is really nice.
radiohead was 2006. and they are a band that tours almost exclusively upon album release (06 being the exception), so 6 years and 2 albums later makes them perfect for the festivals this year.
also, they are on record as saying that Bonnaroo was the best show they ever played, so I'm sure they are looking forward to going back.
phish and radiohead are my favorite bands, so looks like i'm heading back to the farm this year.
Certainly, i can attest to the religious fervor of arcade fire fans especially those in the front rows, ive been 6th and 5th row both times i saw them, but the people around me werent rude, nor was it that hard for me to get to the front, and im a small guy, typical italian heritidge looking kid.
ive told this story before, but i got in line to see Arcade Fire in portland in 2010, an hour and a half ahead of time. by that point, the line to get in, it was GA, and the line to get in strectched all around the arena, onto the sidewalk. I was way back. And incredibly everyone in front of me, must have chosen to sit in the stands, because i got 5th row.
that said, ive never been to a festival
fearing for my life had nothing to do with 'arcade fire fans'. i've seen them several times and their fans are always really chill. it was the coachella crowd that i had a problem with. i feared for my life because as the day went on people continued to push and try and fit themselves in spaces where they couldn't fit. up front we basically had the weight of 50,000 people on our back. it was a fight to just not lose your feet and get trampled. i couldn't breathe at all. it was pretty scary. after a bunch of pushing back and forth i ended up about 5 rows of people back in just as bad of a predicament. i ended up having to jump up and crowd surf my way over the rail. i did this during mumford & sons which was right before arcade fire as i recall.
i did get to watch a song in front of the rail which would've been cool had i not felt like i was going to pass out. i probably saw another 50-100 people doing the same thing because you really couldn't breathe. it was just a really bad scene. i couldn't help but think of roskilde. the weird thing was that there seemed to be quite a few people around me who couldn't have seemed to care less. they were actually enjoying it. maybe it's a california thing?
This years lineup looks solid, but its definitely not enough to make the trek back to Manchester. Radiohead will be kick ass and Phish won't disappoint, but I don't really care about the Beach Boys and RHCP just aren't what they used to be.
I would be most excited for Bon Iver, Avetts, Fitz and the Tantrums, and Dawes. My guess is I will be able to see a few of these guys in the new england area without having to drop the money on Bonnaroo. I am sure Radiohead will play Boston too.
2003 Mansfield: July 2
2004 Boston: Sept 28 & 29
2005 Montreal: Sept 15
2006 Boston: May 24 & 25
2008 Hartford: June 27, Mansfield: June 28,
2010 Boston: May 17
2013 Worcester: Oct 15, Hartford: Oct 25,
2016 Hampton: April 18, Raleigh: April 20 (cancelled), Columbia: April 21. Quebec: May 5. Boston (Fenway): August 7
EV Solo: Boston 8/2/08, Boston 6/16/11
means no trip for this guy.
fenway, you should go to forecastle. that's what i'll be doing. a my morning jacket production - how could you go wrong? not to mention it's fairly cheap. i can't wait to see who they get on the bill. louisville is a great city.

More to Come....
Radiohead's performance at Bonnaroo in 2006 is still one of the most amazing shows I've ever witnessed. The only PJ show that tops it (for me) is the Halloween show at the Spectrum in 2009.
I also wanted to add that when Phish was there previously they did two performances but only one of those was in a regular headlining slot. The other was a late night show. I'm surprised they're not billed for a 2nd late night performance again this year.
I expected Bonnaroo would have Phish again eventually, better than having Widespread Panic headline yet another year. I kinda want to go again, but just to see them and Radiohead. The last Roo I went to was 2008. Wanted to go in 2009 (last decent lineup IMO) but couldn't.
Radiohead is my favourite band next to PJ, so obviously I wish I was going to be there. We miss out in Australia on great festivals of this nature. BDO doesnt quite make the cut.
