Does the UK and Canadian gov't fund creative activities?

So, ive heard stories, and was wondering if people could confirm or deny this. Ive heard that the canadian government gives loans and grants, and gives away quite a bit of money to bands and artists, in music and other mediums, to fund their creative activities. Is this true?

Also, ive noticed, with many films, filmed in Britain, during the opening credits, they will show these two fingers crossed, and then it says something like "UK film Counsil and UK lottery". Does the UK government do something similar to the canadian gov't? Does the UK lottery fund creative projects?

And i guess the big question is, how do people get that money? I dont live in the UK or canada, but im just curious. Do you have to present some proposal to the govt? How much money are you given? Is it a one time thing, or if you are a musician, can you ask for money on multiple albums? If you are a filmmaker can you ask for funding on multiple movies?

Whats the deal with canadian and Uk governments and creative artistic funding?

  • Yes they do in Canada.
Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V
  • I got many Canada Counsel grants when I was in college. Not a lot of money but it helped.

They also have "Can Con" laws that require radio to play at least 1/3 Canadian artists.
  • what are the stipulations of the money? are there stipulations? do you have to be an established artist to get money, or can you be a newbie, a first time filmmaker, first time musician? an amatuer artist?

is it limited to only film and music? can a painter get funds as well? a writer?

do you have to do specific things with the art created? like i am getting a student loan right now, unrelated to an art grant or anything, as im in america, but, as part of the student loan i can only get the loan money if i am taking classes in order to get some sort of degree or be in some sort of program. i cant just take a few classes in things im into, and i cant take classes in things that dont result in a degree. we i could but i wouldnt get student loans.

is that similar to the canadian art funds? Could you create some bizaare david lynch type film with funds, or do they stipulate you cant have objectionable content in it? Could you create a really controversial series of paintings, or do you have to abide by certain rules? could you make a really radical anti government album ala Rage against the Machine and still get funds?
  • thats one of the major failings of the US. I dont get why stuff like this isnt federally funded. Im an artist myself. Just paint, draw, write on my own, but i'd like to hone my craft and eventually make my art public. But alot of the stuff set up, programs and such are stuff where you have to pay money, and are set up where they only support the established artist. I heard about this really cool retreat for artists. Little houses for artists, an artist colony sort of. and they only took established artists. Which was really upsetting. Couldnt non established artists benefit from artists retreats and houses for artists as well?
