last years who is arcade fire and this years who is bon iver or boney bear is sad in some ways, but it could be expected.

the who is paul mccartney statements by people on twitter, and facebook, as mentioned in the grammys thread is completely bizaare. he obviously wasnt just in a big band a famous band, he was in the most successful band in history, and is reguarded by many including myself as one of the greatest songwriters of all time.

If i have kids, im going to make sure they know not only about important musicians, but important artists and people period.

i think exposing your child to the beatles should be required parenting.

  • I would have to agree! I thought it was quite ridiculous when I read those posts where people had no idea who Paul McCartney is..
I thank my parents for the great music they introduced me to!!

  • Haha tell me about it. I'm 13 and when The Who or Tom Petty did the Superbowl everyone at my school were like, "Who's The Who", Or "Who was that Tom guy" My generation is horrible, nobody knows good music. As for Paul McCartney, saw tons of who is this guy statuses on my facebook... I couldn't believe it!

Some people are musically ignorant (I think that's the right word). That should be required, Music 101 to know who The Beatles are. Paul is only the most successful musician of the 20th century.

If you don't know who Paul McCartney is, or The Beatles for that matter, you should your head examined.

  • i definitely agree it should be the parents responsibility to educate their children not only about music, but make them cultured in all arts. But i also sort of wonder, with these big bands like The Beatles or something, how you couldnt pick that up by osmosis even if your parents never talked to you about the band. The Beatles especially and the The Who to an extent, Tom petty as well, these are all bands that are part of our everyday world. The Beatles coined phrases, have album after album that are classics, have songs that are standards, we reference them as part of our daily lives, we hear them on the radio. Its surprising teens or whoever was asking about who sir paul was, how they werent able to pick up on that.

I remember quite clearly, my parents had a record player when i was a kid, and my dad used to exercise and stretch in the house and play the Born in the USA album. And i remember spinning around. And i remember the Thriller album cover, and that picture of MJ in the inside notes. I remember the naked photos of John and Yoko on Unfinished Music.

I think its no surprise i turned out to be a massive fan of all 3 of those artists.

Funny AND disturbing. All these kids should be taken from their parents and sent to social services. Worst part is, if they don't know who Paul is, I'm guessing they don't know who Eddie Vedder is either! THAT...is just not acceptable. :D

along those same lines, a guy I work with was pissed that they closed the show with "new Paul songs":lol:

Once I corrected him and hipped him to one of the greatest second sides of all time, he went on to ask who was playing guitar with him earlier in the show.?.
    "joe Walsh" I said
"who is Joe Walsh?" he replies

I mean, I hate the Eagles but his solo shit is pretty good.. and his guitar work must be respected either way..
and how could I forget the James Gang

Interesting thread. I suppose the generation you're talking about is the 15-25ish year olds now. I have kids older than some of the people on here so I think I'll ask them if they know who he is. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if they had no idea and it wouldn't bother me at all.

The Beatles split over 40 years ago and apart form Band on the Run he's done nothing any good since. I'll let you know what their response is.

And what's all this "our generation" talk. My g-g-generation know exactly who the fuck Macca is and I just turned 30.

Whats funny is when my friends play mainstream music I always tell them "what the fuck is this crap?" and they all look at me in shock like im crazy for not knowing what their terrible music is. I once brought up why anyone would EVER listen to the radio anymore when they can just plug in their ipod or phone and listen to THEIR OWN music. This chick goes, "well sometimes the radio surprises you". With what? the same crap its been churning out every 20 minutes with a boat load of ads thrown in between?

To not know who Paul McCartney is, is a joke.

I remember in 1982 when I drove my 14 yr old neighbor to school one day, she didn't know who Peter Frampton is.
Talk about album sales....but by 1982, he was not doing well. He was not on the "pop charts".

I was initially surprised by the social media remarks about who is Paul McCartney but then again, does the poisonous radio play Beatles' songs? Is he on vh1? I think not. And if the 15-25 year olds do not know of it, how can it be their parents' fault? Maybe they did not listen to them either. My older sister hated their movies. As for the grammy's, I did not care for his Valentine song. I loved the Beatles as a child. I liked their pop music, stopped listening to them later, except one of my favorites was John Lennon's, "Imagine." Lately, I heard a Beatles song on a commercial covered by a young guy and I think it is called "love you more?" I like that!

I'm with nuffingman here. Why would a 14/15 year old be interested in a bloke from a band that broke up more than 40 years ago and is much older than their parents? I was born in 1957 ( ). When I was that age, I had grown up with loads of blues/rock & roll/folk guys/bands and the 'usual' Led Zep, Allman Bros, Stones as well as French artists and yes, the Beatles (though I was never really taken by their music - too 'poppy' for me). Could I name influential artists from the 30's - ie 40 years prior - then even if they were still around (but not really 'relevant' anymore)? Hmmmm... probably not. So let's put this into perspective.

Most will know Lennon - and rightly so. And not just because of his demise.

My 10 year old's favorite band is The Beatles. I'm taking her to see her favorite Beatle, Ringo Starr, this year... assuming his tour comes to Boston.

I'm confident that in about another 10 years, her favorite Beatle will have evolved to John, or maybe George, and then when she gets old like me, maybe it will devolve to Paul, as has seemed to have happened to me.

Seriously though, Ringo's still way cool. 8-)

I think it's a small %, and not "a generation", that would actually fall into the category of not knowing Paul. Of course it makes for a good story. That's like saying all of those girls who tweeted that they'd let Chris Brown beat them up is an entire generation of female abuse enablers.

My son's favorite song is "I've got my mind set on you" by George Harrison. He listens to George Harrisons greatest hits CD every night when he goes to bed (he is 4 btw). When I put on a Beatles album he showed no interest until I told him George Harrison was in the Beatles. Then he wanted to hear "I've got my mind set on you."

Still though, I'm proud that my son is showing interest in good music at such an early age.

Make sure you let them listen to all the good stuff that just came out and won't expire any time soon. You know, the stuff that was written and inspired by the Beatles. :)

I don't take anything away from their influence, but I just find their sound dated.

I also don't really like them anyway.

'In My Life' is an exception, but aside from that I am not fussed.

Funny thing is, it'd take less effort to google 'Paul McCartney' than it would to tweet 'Who the fuck is Paul McCartney?'

And how can anyone not know who Paul McCartney is anyway? He wrote the Frog Song!!
  • Probably because he isn't the real Paul McCartney. He died in a car crash. hahahahahahahaha

Just wanted to throw that out there for the conspiracy theorists.
