They play IC MArch 7 I am so excited to see them again...
  • My favorite band right now. You can't really go wrong with them.

Emotionalism and I & Love & You are brilliant albums and are the ones that got me hooked so I'd recommend starting there.
The Gleam and The Second Gleam are also amazing - all ballads.
Been getting into their older stuff lately - Four Thieves Gone, Migionette, A Carolina Jubilee.

Everything they do is brilliant. Hope you enjoy them.

And as someone already said, Live is a great album. Their live shows are the best.

Yup, if this album doesn't hook you in then there is no hope for you. Absolutely love this band and I just picked up my ticket to see them again at the Gulf Shores, AL next month :D

  • heard 4 thieves as i was cooking for 100 people or helping to cook for 100 people my first night at a commune in virginia. was mindblowing and is still as evocative as hell. doesnt get much better than Famous Flower of Manhattan, Sixteen in July, or Matrimony.

Listen to this dude, agreed on pretty much everything he said! And agree most with 'their live shows are the best', because it is beyond true! The absolutely blew me away live and it was one of the most fun performances I have ever seen, while still being equally as incredible musically! You gotta see them!

I'm very excited about the new album. They've been working on it and are saying it should be out this spring. And you're right, they have a ton of material to consider for it. They've been playing a lot of songs live lately that don't appear on any albums yet that we may see on the new record - one of my favorites being 'The Once and Future Carpenter.' YouTube that song if you've never heard it (can't link it from work). It's stunning.

Live Vol.2, Emotionalism ,Mignonette, Both of the Gleams. I would then move on to Live Vol.3 and the I&L&U album. Just my opinion......Start with some of the older stuff. Enjoy!

  • whats great about them is they do can do so many things perfectly. They can go for the freak out stuff, sort of hat has been called grungegrass stuff, almost punk folk. then come up with some gorgeous simple melody, harmony and guitar stuff like bella donna
  • when i first got into them, thats how they were described, grungegrass. i got the sense they started out big first on the east coast, specifically in virginia and surrounding areas, then slowly became the big act they are now

I started with Emotionalism and Live Volume 3, went to I and Love and You and then backtracked. All their material is great.

I have a buddy in a band down in Asheville and he said the Avett's shows were a lot different when they first started out. Almost a punked out bullgrass. Would play crazy shows for 3 hours. Still great live, but their sound seems to have changed a bit.

Can't wait to hear the new album though. Its rumored to be much more upbeat.

  • Can't go wrong with any of their live stuff. Got to see them a couple months ago in Milwaukee and what I really loved was the wide range of folks they appeal too. Young kids, all the way through middle-aged people together enjoying music and ALL singing along. Kinda rare to see newer bands that appeal to such a wide audience, but these guys do it well.

New album coming out this year should be interesting. I read its going to be a little more "plugged in" than anything they've done before. Can't say for sure, but I think Rick Rubin was working with them again?

Yeah, I read Rubin is on board for the new album. Last album was supposedly guided more by Rubin, but for the new one the Avett's had more freedom to do what they want. You're right...it is going to be more "plugged in."
