I recently bought a cheap Takamine as a knock around acoustic, an impulse buy really as it was $300 had nice action and sounded OK. Love playing it but the frets are a bit sharp on the lower end of the neck. Anyone have any suggestions to dull them?

  • From my experience it can be remedied by humidifying the guitar and/or the room that you keep the guitar in. I keep my guitars in a room with ~40% humidity, for what it's worth. Or you could just file the frets down (or have a luthier do it).

If you have never filed down a fret before, I highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend that you do not do it yourself. I know it's only a cheap guitar, but you could make it completely unplayable with making a mistake on filing it yourself. I know many guitars that were ruined forever by the player who thought filing a fret is the same thing as filing your nails.

  • this issue is more and more common everyday with most manufacturers. It's getting irritating that they won't take the time to file the frets down. The sad thing is this is happening on 8 and 9 hundred dollar guitars..

  • I would definitely take it to someone to file them down. If you want to do it yourself, I'm sure you can find "how to videos on youtube

Take it to a luthier for a fret crown and level. Will cost generally around 50 to 60 bucks and should include a setup.

My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.
