The Horrifying Ordeal of Super Bowl Commercials

On Sunday, I felt like I was watching a ton of commercials with a football game sprinkled in. As I am now in my 30s, my interest in sports has waned considerably. However, I have been a Giants fan my whole life, so I watched with some interest. If the Giants weren't playing --and if they lost--it would have been the worst Super Bowl viewing experiences due to the constant bombardment of commercials--cutting to a commercial break every damn minute--and the sheer idiocy of the commercials.
Is this more evidence of the commerciality, commodification, consumeristic and materialistic control of our society. or is it simply an opportunity for companies to "showcase their product" during the highest rated TV event of the year?

Your thoughts?

I like the commercials to an extent, but I really just want to watch a good game and leave it at that. What a game! Boring, kind of but that was because it was well played and 2 evenly matched teams. I really enjoyed the game and Brady is unreal. 5 Super Bowls in 12 years (really 10). And he isn't even done. The Patriots will be back, but so will the Giants.

There is way to much money to be lost just playing the game without commercails, but I agree, lets play!

I actual appreciate the whole event for what it is...a spectacle...these types of events give people a reprieve from differences. The differences for most are simply which team they are rooting for and whether or not the doritos commercial was funny...I love it for that. There isn't anything that seems to be happening in the world during the super bowl...And without the commercials and the spectacle it isn't anything special, it becomes just another silly football game. I don't know, maybe putting too much into it, but for at least a night, people who may not feel like a part of much, can feel like they are a part of something. I think that is important.

speaking of giants fans...have you ever seen the movie with Patton Oswalt where he plays a crazy giants fan?

I've heard of the film, but have not seen it. I heard that Oswalt was actually pretty good in it. is it worth a viewing?

TV exists for advertising and commercials, not so we can watch shows. People watch and think the shows are the focus when in reality, they shows are just filler for advertising.

Don't mind the commercials per say, there aren't more breaks between plays, just the normal stop and start.
BUT, get rid of the halftime show and do we need 'America the Beautiful' right before the National Anthem? It is overkill.

I liked it. I particularly enjoyed the aspect of sports talk radio. if you have 1:30 to kill it is worth a watch...

well, when they're getting 3.5 mil for a spot, I'm surprised they didnt delay the game to jam an extra 30 second spot tin there every time the ball stopped...or did they? :shifty:

  • The aspect of commercialism that annoys me is the content of ads that are misleading and lack validity.
Many advertised products are directed toward people who are gullible and uninformed.
People are duped into buying products from companies on the premise that only this certain product is the solution to your problem. Over the counter meds are an example of this. Of course there will be no mention of a healthy preventative lifestyle.
Direct marketing to consumers from pharmaceutical companies presents many problems. Most evident is prescription drugs that are hawked in prime time encouraging patients to seek out expensive and potentially dangerous drugs that they --- and too often their MD no little about.

For me, TV in general has too many advertisements so I don't watch much of it. I watched the Superbowl the way I would view a film on sociology. The commercials seem like a mirror to our society- brutal, general low in intelligence, glitzy. The one that irritated me the most though was the one promoting kids getting into shape (good idea) and then saying something like, "Kids, get in shape with X-box". I don't think so. :?

Getting 3.5 mil? You mean paying 3.5 mil for a spot. Super bowl for advertisers is the most expensive slots but with the most viewership. That's why advertisers are willing to pay so much.

That's a great way to watch tv, to view it as a sociological experiment. Commercials reflect the programming. What really gets me is that advertisers have come to view their audience as dumb idiots. The dumbing down of ads in general the past few years is enough to make me turn off the tv for days at a time. It's embarrassing. And it's even more embarrassing to think that some of these ads actually persuade people.

FYI - there weren't any more commercials during the Super Bowl than for any other normal NFL game, besides halftime and pre/post-game.

Start watching NHL hockey! They might have 2-3 commercial breaks per period.

Football is pretty bad. But it's even worse when you are at a game just sitting there during the breaks. Every now and then I go to a college football game that isn't televised and it's amazing how fast it goes.

But, the NFL network deals are costing the networks $4.3B this year from media deals. By 2014, it will be up to $7B.

I'd rather watch commercials then a full NHL game...almost as bad as soccer. ;)

Absolutely... 3 breaks, and during playoffs, there are no commerical breaks in overtime. Awesome action.

I will look for the article, but there was some media group that studied some NFL games, and on average there is like 11-12 minutes of actual action in a game. That is pathetic... Going to NFL games are painful. It's fun to be part of the atmosphere and the tailgating and stuff, but when you actually sit down to watch the game, it's so long and drawn out.

Playoff OT is the best thing in sports, anywhere in the world. I was at a game that went to 5 overtimes - it ended at 2:30am. And we were stranded in Pittsburgh trying to find a cab ride back to our hotel in our Flyers garb.
