MIA and the halftime controversy

Should be interesting to see how her gesture at the super bowl haftime show plays out in the next couple days and weeks. Its already been major news on all the major websites and news stations.

Its kind of funny seeing people react to her, in various outlets as a no name rapper, or someone who isnt known.

Kala and Arular were two of the most critically acclaimed and best albums of the 2000's so far.

MIA, is someone I would assume the fans of Pearl Jam would respect. Someone who believes her art should be used for political activism. In fact that seems her overall mission. The music seems almost secondary to her. Its the lyrics and her message, getting people involved that seems to be the focus

Inintially I thought it was just for attention but maybe I'll check out what they're about, thanks for the info.
  • Ugh let's just get rid of the damn halftime show with all of these talentless and/or over-the-hill people.

Regardless of what she's about, flipping off the camera at the Super Bowl was just a childish attention-seeking publicity stunt which I have no respect for. I'm not offended, I just think it was silly.

I've been a huge MIA fan for over 5 years, but tonight she was lame. I don't care one way or the the about the finger, but that Madonna song is terrible.

I don't mind MIA but honestly i did not even know that was her

I did not notice the finger or the SHIT bomb dropped during the show if no one pointed it out i would not have enve known it happened.

I think it is kind of lame she did it. I mean when you sign up to do the super bowl you know they don't want that. If you are against not doing it don't sign up for it in the first place.

What I find funny is that NBC is saying that they did not mean for this to happen and that they were too late to censor it. What a joke! This was all planned, just like with the Janet Jackson thing years ago - just to get people talking about the halftime performance.

Smart move by her to gain publicity. I had never heard of her before and still wouldn't know who she is if she didn't flip us off.

It's not going to lead to any purchases from me ... but she is on my radar for at least a week or two.

I didn't notice anything that offensive aside from teh performance in general.

Can't believe how many people are saying they enjoyed this. Madonna looked like she had a back brace on and was doing so many age inappropriate things. It just wasn't good. And good lord, could they at least make the music sound live. That shit came right off the cd.

They just need to ditch the big performer thing at halftime. Petty, The Who, The Boss....all bands I enjoy enough for a 20 minute halftime show blow out were all equally as awful as last night.

I didn't see it because I only watched a little of the show. Madonna's dancing isn't what it used to be. I didn't even know this had happened until I saw something about it this morning and the first thing I thought of was attention-seeking moment. I liked her first album. Everything else of her's has been crap. So I guess if you can't garner attention by your music, you have to get desperate.

Who were the two guys that looked like Sideshow Bob?
  • Was there even controversy? Or just oversensationalization from the press?

They're called LMFAO. They had a big 2011 hit with "Party Rock Anthem" (if you've been to an American sporting event in the last year, or have seen the Kia dancing-hamsters commercial, you've heard it) and a follow-up called "Sexy and I Know It." Dance-pop silliness, but I must admit it's catchy. Madonna worked bits of both of their hits into her performance when they were on stage with her.

I didn't notice any of these things that people are worried about. I was watching Madonna with curiosity. I thought her show was very well prepared.

The first thing I noticed was that her costume designer did a fantastic job! That roman outfit made her look attractive and fit but covered everything that might have showed her age. She looked beautiful. Then the religious outfit at the end did the same.

It was obvious that all the music was from the cds and that she was lip-synching (and I was a little shocked that it was a blatant ad for a magazine as well as her song,) but...she managed to make her show look polished and good in the few minutes she had. It looked really well planned and prepared and I admire that. :)

  • The funny thing is they stopped using thugs for these shows after the whole Janet Jackson thing and went to straight-up rock by guys who were past their prime and wouldn't do anything stupid. And now we're back to thugs.

100% agree with this post. ;)

As with Nipplegate, I had no idea it happened until the next morning.

Is that pronounced Mia, like the Uma Thurman character in Pulp Fiction? Or is it like POW/MIA?

I've actually heard that several times today. The only thing I know her for is that Paper Planes song that sampled Straight To Hell by the Clash.

At work today I've noticed very little talk about it. More people talking about the game, crappy commercials, etc. And most talk about the halftime show is about whether or not Madonna was really singing.

The people that have talked about it have mainly said:

    "Who the hell is M.I.A.?"

"She must not be very good if she's that hard-up for publicity"

And from the one guy that's a fan of hers: "She probably thought she had to do something edgy to save face after the stupid pom-pom dancing she had been doing in the show"

    Super_Bowl_Football_027d7-1897.jpg?uuid=9RTjTlBoEeG9T4p9U_bWwg

It certainly isn't as big of news as the "wardrobe malfunction", in fact for years we've been expecting some un-original attention hog to try and do something to get noticed. I figured it would be Madonna, but to her credit she just did her show, which I think she pretty much had her hands full with. It's no surprise that the least well-known person on that stage would attempt to do something to get noticed, especially with a single out and an album due for release in the upcoming months.

Is causing some controversy actually any good for somebody's career? Did Janet Jackson really benefit from her controversy? People talked about her for a little while, and I think she got an SNL hosting job out of it (that was mainly centered on her controversy) and that was it. Nowadays that's what most people think of when you say Janet Jackson as opposed to her body of work. I hadn't heard anything about her in years until her brother passed away.

Unfortunately for M.I.A. her little stunt doesn't appear to be making the same waves that Janet's did. Of course it's being reported on, but in the 24 hour news cycle a kitten in a tree will get news attention if the news day is slow enough.

I'd say it is. Janet Jackson had a pretty successful career that had pretty well run its course when that shit happened.

Yeah, but I don't think it really revived it. She was talked about for the controversy, but I haven't heard anything about her actual music career since. After she hosted SNL that was all I saw of her until Michael passed on. If all M.I.A. wants is 15 minutes of fame for something unrelated to her actual work she might be on the right track, but I don't know if this will necessarily translate into career success.

It's probably been mentioned by that cheerleader song was one of the worst songs I've ever heard. Hopefully that is not representative of Mia's music. If Madonna were making music that bad in the 80s we never would've heard of her (hopefully). Hard to stomach because I do respect Madonna as an artist; although the lip syncing was brutally obvious.

Madonna almost had a malfunction of her own with the help of one of the LMFAO guys...

Just after 6:00. It looks like they purposely go to a long shot because of it.

And I don't think the lip-syncing is such a bad thing for these halftime shows. One less thing the producers need to worry about with this going out to such a large audience. Pretty sure I could hear her over the backing track a few times anyway.

I think it's to be expected. Most pop stars are considered "entertainers" first and musicians/vocalists second. Fans of that kind of music are often just as into the dancing and spectacle of the shows as the music itself. They don't want to just go watch Madonna sing. I'm pretty sure everybody knew going in Madonna was going to lip sync, just like most other pop acts do. I'm more surprised that people actually thought she was going to go out there and sing than any backlash over the obviously canned music. One of the things that sets Madonna apart from many of these other acts that if she had to, she could actually sing.

I'm told that in her shows she'll calm things down, let the dancers take a break and actually sing some songs. So I don't think it's a case of Madonna having no talent. It was the Super Bowl, the show is supposed to be a big spectacle, so she put on a show instead of a concert.

Nothing wrong with the Stallyns and I thoroughly enjoyed your previous herky-jerky dancer, but the comment was geared towards Yellow Ledbelly's quote of your quote and their avatar.

I think it's even funnier that religious nuts are calling the halftime a satanic ritual. This is priceless:
