it is an interesting point of view, however, the capitalism/marxism reference is a bit far fetched...

Personally, I think it has a lot to do with the availability of digital media. Cassettes and CD's were convenient because most people had a stereo at home and in their vehicle that played those types of media. Nowadays, you can purchase (or illegally obtain) pretty much any album in digital format. Most vehicles now have iPod or other auxiliary integration so you can connect your digital device and play it through your car stereo. With that, I think more people are reverting back to vinyl for home listening. Granted, you can listen to digital media at home, too. But I think the nostalgia of vinyl is really making a comeback for home listeners. We're relearning to appreciate the sound quality of vinyl.

Vinyl production has also risen, so it could be that marketing is starting to catch on as well. Artists/labels are releasing more and more album on vinyl now as well.

I fit this category, after years and years of digital music via cd's and mp3s when I heard the sound of vinyl, I became instantly hooked, and the love on searching and buying music which had gone away since about 2003 really has been reignited with vinyl. I just started building my collection in August 2011 and I have spent about $800 I would say so there is money to be made producing vinyl

Supply/demand. More people want vinyl these days. Plus, while piracy drives down the cost of digital music, it probably inflates the cost of real physical media. That said, CD costs have remained static...perhaps a slight increase. It couldn't be better timing for the music industry for vinyl to be making a comeback

  • Vinyl is trendy. Vinyl is cool. Vinyl sounds different(not necessarily better). Vinyl is bigger. Vinyl is more. Record companies are more than happy to sell vinyl. At least then people are paying for the music. We buy vinyl because they make vinyl and they make more and more because we have "bought" into it. I would guess 99% of new music is recorded digitally. Doesn't that mean the wave you are listening to is actually a bunch of 1's and 0's with missing pieces in between?

I have always had a thing for vinyl. I have everything from old rap albums to Sam Cooke albums my uncles gave me 20+ years ago. I think especially these days...it's sort of a social thing - I love when friends start looking through my collection. Vinyl sounds earthy and nostalgic. Digital is always with us everywhere but to enjoy a record you have to make a point to be somewhere. You can't jog, drive on the highway or wait in line at Starbucks while listening to your vinyl...I think there is just something about it that connects people to the music.

I'm buying vinyl now, I started doing it regularly in 2005, before I just purchased it, I always found vinyl a cool thing to have, not only because I consider it sounds better, but also because you can appreciate the art work better, and it is kind of a ceremony when you open it for the first time or when you want to spin the wax, I started purchasing vinyl in order to have my favourites bands' albums on vinyl, even though I had the CD's, I had some INXS, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, ACDC, Led Zeppelin, and others albums on vinyl, then, in 2005 I started collecting vinyl, I started completing my artists collection before, but in 2005 I went for the vinyl instead of the CD, for the reason I expressed on the first and second line, and what amazed me the most is that many artist now, not PJ, sell the vinyl with a digital download code, so you can have the best in both worlds... to my is more than just a trend, or a way to stand out, listening to vinyl is kind of hypnotik and self rewarding, it is kind of a present you give to yourself, you work your ass off to get the dough, and you spend it on something you really enjoy, and it takes time and patience to listen to a vinyl record, and it becomes a more enjoyable experience...

Sadly, mostly b/c people think it's "cool". Not that it isn't about the coolest thing imaginable, but there's alot of people that get into it b/c it's trendy.

If it was truly about the hi-def sound there would be a rise in sales of lossless audio, sacd's and hi-def cd's.
  • Hopefully because they are sick of hearing lousy mp3 and flac files.

    I love vinyl!!

I agree with Dewey in that part of it is that it's trendy right now to buy vinyl. Also I think the high prices of out of print stuff is causing people to buy up everything now and then hoping they can make a killing selling it down the road after it's well out of print.

The artwork is cool and there's a certain vibe to records, but there are alot of vinyl albums that have pretty awful sound quality. When stuff is done right for vinyl I don't think it can be beat, though. I just don't think that really has that much of an impact on sales.
  • believe it or not, but cassettes are making a comeback as well. everything commercial is cyclical; nostalgia is the biggest factor.

vinyl is super inconvenient. however, I agree with the hottie that said there's just something about sitting down and putting on a record. it's the aural equivalent of reading a book instead of just turning on the tv and watching something you care nothing about.

that being said, I'm currently getting rid of my collection. too expensive a hobby for me.
