I am so happy that Brendon is doing the next album...
I love Binaural (Blake), Riot Act (Kasper) and Avocado (Kasper) but we needed Brendon back!
I missed the crisp sounds that he creates, especially with drums! I mean, HOW GOOD ARE JACK'S TOM-TOMS IN GIVEN TO FLY!
Thank you Brendon! I can't WAIT to hear your influence again!!!
This could be the best album since Yield? (I do love Bin, RA and Avo too!!)

I love Riot Act. I think Kasper did a good job with the sound. I think he tried to apply the same to Avocado and it didn't fit. I still like Avocado, though.
I had not thought of that yet. Reading that sentence just hit home. I love the warmth of the drums on Yield. And, though I mean no offense to Jack fans, I think Matt's drums will sound awesome with Mr. O'Brien's take. He works out those toms pretty good.
But most of all, it'll sound good in the car!
thanks i'll make mental note of that.
ggggrrrrrrrrrr

I'm not too educated on what a producer does in the studio. But, the devil's advocate in me is saying, would it have mattered? If the songwriting wasn't up to the level of the previous albums, what difference does the sound of the recording make? Does the producer really get involved with the songwriting too?
I don't think my opinion of Avocado would be any different if it was recorded better. To me, the songs are just good, not great, and that's because the songs don't go too deep or challenge me too much. The songwriting seemed pretty straightforward. And, the political bent to the lyrics was kinda boring for me. To me, those were the limitations of the record, not the "sound."
I guess what I would love to see out of the next album is more "stretching" of the songs, challenging the band to take the songs to different places, bring some new instruments in, bring back some of the crunchy, unclean guitars.
If that's what BOB brings to the table, then I'm all for the change.
I liked the original tracklisting for Binaural. I also think the record sounds very good.
I think Avocado was meant to be straight-forward or in-your-face. But to me, it sounds like the guys recorded it live but the EQ was flat. The best example of what I mean are the guitars in Marker In The Sand. Both studio and live, the guitars just don't really have the kick they should. They should be clean and crunchy but instead it comes across as tinny.
I would love to hear some banjo or mandolin on a PJ track. Listen to Mike Watt's Ball-hog Or Tugboat?, track #1: Big Train. The Meat Puppets are playing both on the song and it rocks HARD!
I think the band tends to take songs to different places all the time. Especially Avocado. Army Reserve, Inside Job, Big Wave. Those are all "abnormal" riffs.
O'Brien produced Vs., Vitalogy, No Code and Yield. Those are all stellar albums. Ed said that recording Into The Wild made him excited about writing again from a different aspect and he couldn't wait to write more PJ songs.
It's gonna be a masterpiece. I feel that shit in my bones.
