So Fox is number one, huh? Is this for real? Seriously, I'm not stirring to stir up shit here- I honestly can't believe this... though I suppose I should, huh? :?

http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/cutline/fox ... 14917.html

"Last fall, Fox News celebrated its 15th anniversary with a lavish party in New York. Fox News president Roger Ailes, who launched the channel in 1996, toasted 700 or so staffers that night, telling them, "Losing is highly overrated as a learning experience."

On Tuesday afternoon, when Nielsen releases its final ratings for the month of January, the "fair and balanced" network will mark an arguably more important milestone: 10 consecutive years at the top of the cable news rankings.

Yahoo News recently spoke will Bill Shine, Fox News Channel's EVP of programming, about the significance of the achievement, the state of cable news, and how the cable network has managed to sustain its pole position while defending Fox from its fervent critics, including Jon Stewart."

The thing is... FOX may be a viable source for news. The problem is, many of its viewers perceive their commentary as journalism. They skip through the actual news portions and tune into the Hannity or O'Rielly Factor and think they are presenting news, not opinion. what the viewers are getting in opinions and editorials on news events, not the actual news.
It would be the same thing if you read the local newpaper and only read the op-ed section and felt informed. or, if they only read the critics reports on movies and television and formed opinions based on that critic's opinions, not the movie itself.
Not saying ALL FOX viewers are like this... but, I'm betting that a LOT of them are. If you hear what you WANT to hear... you'll tend to buy into it, rather than the stuff you don't want to hear about.
and YES... this works for the other end of the spectrum, too. The ones who get their 'News' from Rachael Maddow.

I have to say that I catch O'Reilly when I can (sorry, Cosmo  ) - huge fan of Dennis Miller's weekly diatribes on there as well - and I respect the opinions of folks like Dobbs, Hume, Greenberg. There's an old-school integrity with them that I appreciate and don't see much of these days.

However, I also like to get my news from as many sources as possible...can't limit oneself or put the blinders on.

That's it. You almost HAVE to get your information from serveal sources in order to filter out the personal bias of the editor, newsroom director, copy writers and talking heads.
And I too, watch The O'Rielly Factor, Hannity (when I can stomach himm) and Rachael Maddow to get varying opinions... not news, opinions.
Good news sources are PBS, NPR, BBC and Canadian Broadcasting.

I don't watch any American cable news. But I was at the gym yesterday in front of the tv with Fox News on and station identification advertising comes on showing that Fox is real journalism, and I start laughing. It was so bad I had to move away because people really believe this!

The other thing about 'Top Rated' when it comes to television... is that such a great thing?
I mean, isn't 'Dancing With The Stars', 'American Idol' and 'Celebrity Apprentice', Top Rated television shows? Are those shows any good? I don't know, because I don't watch them.
And isn't Justin Bieber a 'Top Rated' singer? Is his music the best? Again, I have no idea what he sings, so I am not the one who can say for sure if he sucks or not. I'm am guessing that based upon my musical tastes, i would probably lean towards the 'He Sucks' side of the fence, rather than the multi-millions whom say otherwise.
That's why 'Rated Number One' does not always mean it is the best thing out there, right?
    ...
    Or does it?

I do think that FOX is #1 by default. The Left's got CNN, MSNBC, Hollywood & music (-Country). All the right has is FOX................& Country music.

  • Fox news has established itself as having an implicit right wing slant. They're the only station out of the...say 10 other stations doing this. People who want to hear something from the devil they know or want to hear the GOPs side of the story will go to Fox news. The other people will scatter themselves amongst the other 9 stations.

You want Fox News to fall out of #1? Have more right wing news networks.

that is about all that needs t be said. It is said that all TV journalism now looks to the fox model as what is successful and try to duplicate it, rather than simply letting the news be the news. Print, cable, and national...all of it spews out opinion as much as facts.

The good thing is most young people aren't getting all their news from one source.

o.k wise gal ! I never watch hanity and james or who ever they are, my only fix.....is the San Diego Fox local news and fox breaking news on the internet, I have seen the Fox stations on the other channels but it like CNN and a lot of others seem just a bit radical and one sided..not my cup of joe.
but all that being said I have to admit I get a chuckle out of it when ever you guys make...funny comments about my choice of news stations when for the most part they all have the same info but just dilivered a little different :D and thats where the enterainment value comes in for me, it's not that I always agree with their ideas it's just a little more fun to read.

Fox is bias, MSNBC is bias. They are basically the same, except on opposite ends of the political spectrum. These are known bias news networks.

Then there's CNBC, which is bias. CNN, which is bias. PBS, which is bias. ABC, NBC, CBS, which is bias. The problem here is these are thought to be unbias networks. Truth be told, they are also a bit less bias in totality, but the issue is their bias in their delivery of actual news (or journalism).

My point is at least with MSNBC and Fox, you know you are getting bias opinion-based news. With the others, you are getting tints of bias journalism. In other words, the CNN-types are giving you what seems like unbias journalism, but there is a hint of bias (underneath). Which is really worse? I'd say the CNN-types are probably worse, because they pretend like they aren't bias. That said, I probably watch more CNN than anything else.

For me, I like having all the options. I enjoy watching MSNBC, Fox AND CNN. For business news, I like that CNBC is bias, and that Fox Business is also bias to the other end. It's a balancing act. But, at least I know it.

The reason Fox does well is simple:

There's no other networks with their right-leaning bias. Whereas, MSNBC is super-left leaning, CNN (ABC, NBC, CBS, CNBC, etc.) all have left-leaning undertones in their journalism. People aren't stupid. They know this. That's why talk radio did so well for so long. There was no news/opinion sources that told the other side of the story consistently. Fox does now.

I try to avoid getting my news from video sources. But I can understand Fox being rated #1. People that watch it do it religiously. And as someone who randomly samples cable news when in hotels, Fox has better production values (although I always laugh at the constant "ALERT" flashing on the screen) and are better then the other networks.

But, as Inlet stated, they are the only source that leans right.

someone made the comparison between fox and msnbc...

at least msnbc does not have "news" anywhere in it's name. it markets itself as "the place for politics" and it makes no excuses for being on the left and does not misrepresent itself by calling itself "news"......you know what you are getting when you turn on that channel. plus it's flagship morning show "morning joe" features a republican former congressman... does fox have an actual liberal with their own show??

Watching FOX "news" to find out what's really going on in the world is a bit like eating your way through bag of fortune cookies to figure out what's happening with your life-- mildly entertaining at times and occasionally a tad bit aligned with reality but in the long run all you get is empty calories.

Don't get me wrong- I think pretty much the same about all TV news.
