Any experience with concussion/head trauma?

Last November I fell on a wet floor in a restaurant and received a concussion and other injuries more minor. I went to a lot of trouble to try to get my loss of time and medical costs (CT scans, x-rays, etc.) covered and after all that headache was told by my lawyer that the restaurant made claims that I know to be false- that they warned me of the wet floor, that it was properly posted, that I ignored them. My wife saw the whole thing happen and knows too that they lied but her testimony cannot be used in a court of law. My lawyer told me it's my word against their three and has dropped my case because he believes I would lose and have to pay the restaurant's legal fees (around $25,000) as well as his. So it looks like that door is closed and I have to absorb some loses. Such is life.

But what concerns me now are the long-term affects of concussion. If anyone has advice about this it would be greatly appreciated. How about cranial-sacral therapy? Just wait and see? I suppose I tend to worry too much about things like this but of all things to injure, the brain concerns me the most. Maybe I just need to let it go and figure now I've got a good excuse for being forgetful.

    Damn Brian, that really sucks...

Maybe a long shot, but does the restaurant have camera's inside the dining area (where I assume you were). Don't see why they would, but if they do... that should help find out for sure if they had it properly indicated that the floor was wet?

    Hope you recover quickly. :)

    Thanks for kind words dc!

I told my lawyer, "I wish to God there had been a video of my fall- that would settle the case right there!" Unfortunately, no such luck.

You don't mention if you had a mild concussion (ie a bit knocked out and dazed) or severe one. As far as I know, there generally no long term effects of a mild concussion (had one myself). Though you need to bear in mind that the symptoms you may have (in my case it was headaches, lack of concentration, and dizziness) can last a few months and won't go straight away. But... if you have concussion upon concussion (if you are very clumsy!), that may be a problem as the effect is cumulative!

As to CST, never tried it.

I guess it would be considered moderate. It's been about 12 weeks and I still get frequent headaches and dizziness. Maybe I'm just not being patient enough. Yes, I have heard that repeated concussions become more problematic. I'm having to be really careful because my balance is off. I bump into walls and doors now and then. I try to cover it up with that "Oh, I meant to do that" look.

  • Oh man Brian, that really sucks. So sorry to hear it.
Do you get common headaches now on a regular basis?

Luckily its only been a few months. Our bodies are pretty amazing machines, hopefully you'll heal 100%.

I had two instances with concussions. One was a 90mph baseball pitch to the head. I was knocked out with slight concussion. But I was 18 and I never had any problems thereafter.
However, I did get a pretty bad concussion in November of 2007 while surfing. My 10 foot longboard hit me right above my eye and gave me 12 stitches and a concussion. Luckily I didnt get knocked out as it was the only time i've EVER surfed by myself. ANyways, I had a good old concussion that made my brain feel like soup for awhile. I didnt do any therapy or anything, but I did get headaches for a few more weeks, maybe months. It slowly disolved to nothing, and now i'm just back to my silly old stupid forgetful self..haha

But brain swelling isnt something you want to mess around with. If your problem persists, I'd go see a specialist..
    Good luck buddy.

My brother has suffered from a lot of freak accidents that resulted in at least 7 or 8 headshots all resulting in a concussion of some type. I'm not sure if there is a relation or not but he is on anti-psychotic medication. It could be that our Italian side had a long history of mental illness but we don't really know because everyone else seems "somewhat" normal.

I don't know very much on the subject but concussions should be treated with care and rest, no unnecessary strain, bright lights or loud noises.

they could use her testimoney...but it potentially wouldn't carry a ton of weight since she is a reletaed party.

i've also seen where if you do sue and lose, you aren't always at risk of having to pay their attourney fee's since there was no agreement in place before the accident.

i would find a better lawyer.

Oh sheesh Brian, I'm sorry about you having to go around in circles with the lawyer and this restaurant. I thought for sure they would settle but it sounds like their playing dirty.... or your lawyer could be better.

I wish I had advice for your concussion..... :(
