As President Obama prepares to raise the debt ceiling -- after the Senate waived its opposition last week -- $5 trillion hikes evidently are no longer "unpatriotic" as Obama said they were in 2008 while describing former President George W. Bush's $4 trillion increase over eight years.

The White House requested authority earlier this month to raise the debt ceiling to $16.4 trillion, up $1.2 trillion from last summer and more than $5 trillion from the statutory limit of $11.3 trillion set in October 2008 before Obama took office. The debt at the time Obama entered the White House was $10.6 trillion. The ceiling was raised to $12.1 trillion within a month of his inauguration. :o

what's that old saying...rubber and clue or something ??

Its the same in the UK with the banking bonus scandal. Labour are saying that ConDems should step in and stop the bonus payouts but it was their ruling that stops the Conservatives from getting involved.

"The problem is that the way Bush has done it in the last eight years is to take out a credit card from the Bank of China in the name of our children, driving up our national debt from $5 trillion from the first 42 presidents. No. 43 added $4 trillion by his lonesome. So we now have over $9 trillion of debt that we are going to have to pay back. $30,000 for every man woman and child. That's irresponsible, that's unpatriotic," he said.

Well I may have been exaggerating a bit. But I don't think it's anything to laugh about.

With total costs in Iraq alone projected to be over 4-6 trillion, I'd say I wasn't that far off.

Afghanistan may end up costing even more. And now idiots like Santorum want to start a conflict with Iran?!?!

I do realize the debt is up around 15 trillion now. But you have to admit that if the US had a foreign policy that resembled that of Sweeden then maybe we wouldn't even be discussing the debt right now.

patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.

People are overly patriotic. Especially in the US......and this is from many people who have never left the country.

I think it's hilarious that you are STILL trying to put the blame on one man and one man only. Like after every term everything previous was wiped clean. Yep, the debt was at zero when Obama went in, Bush had nothing to do with it. Bush didn't start trillion dollar wars. Nope. Everything was fucking rosey when Obama took over.

Yes, one of my favorite Dylanisms:

“They say that patriotism is the last refuge
    To which a scoundrel clings/
Steal a little and they throw you in jail/
Steal a lot and then they make you king.”
"Pretty cookies, heart squares all around, yeah!"

why on earth did you post that ?..did I post that somewhere ?...on here ? or you just ASSuming I said and believe that ? well the fact remains Obama has spent a truck load of money and raised the debt much higher than Bush did and he started off running right out of the gate raising the debt celing about 2 trillion in the first 2 months of his term...I think about that much anyway

  • But Godfather... get serious.

Obama- or any man for that matter- is going to have one Hell of a time cleaning up W's mess. W ran the US for the benefit of him and his group of lackies who tugged and pulled his strings. The disaster he created- I'm sorry to say- has no easy or short term fix and you have yourself to blame. You voted him in for a second term (even though it was shown he wasn't even voted in the first term!).

It's easy to point fingers (even though yours are misdirected at the wrong person). What do you suggest Obama does that's realistic- given the deep problems that have taken root from the previous 8 year regime?

    IDK?

Lest, we mention a 4 trillion dollar war before President Obama took office that was never paid for even though everyone involved got a check in the mail initially caused this spiraling out of control debt mess in the first place? I seem to remember somewhere in the economic history of the year 2000 we were actually in "the black."

exactly. very simple economics that staunch partisans do their best to ignore.
