Why Independent Coffeehouses are Good for Music

I love to learn about music through the interests of independent coffehouse baristas. When I hear something new that I like I ask them about it, and then I usually end up buying the music. For instance, last week I was in Dolcezza Gelato in Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C., when I heard jazz violin music that seemed to sound like music of the 30s or 40s. I asked the baristas about it, and they introduced me to the sounds of Django Rhinehart.

Today I was in Dolcezza Gelato again when I heard the beginnings of a song, and thought

OMG! What a sexy voice!

I decided to ask the baristas the name of the musician before I left. After I heard more of the song I had a <<lightbulb>> moment, and then an <<I should have had a V8>> moment. I realized that I was listening to Eddie Vedder's Hard Sun. So, probably at the same time that I will buy a CD of Django Rhinehart music, I will buy an Eddie Vedder solo album. Music becomes a warm, but colorful scarf when I hear it in a coffeehouse.

Life is funny.

I bought music at non-independent coffee spots, so I guess I shouldn't narrow my focus. Coffee and music just go well together.

I love going to coffee shops by myself, but the music usually sucks and is way too loud. Luckily I've found this perfect little coffee shop in my town that plays all kinds of relaxing music.. I could stay there for hours reading newspapers and watching people (I'm not a pervert, I just love people-watching!).
