Social conservativism correlated with lower intelligence

Not sure if those getting on their high horses (with their own 'sweeping generalisations') have gone beyond the title of the thread and really read the article. Just a lil' extract again....
Oh.. in my opinion (so as to not offend anyone)
"Hodson was quick to note that the despite the link found between low intelligence and social conservatism, the researchers aren't implying that all liberals are brilliant and all conservatives stupid. The research is a study of averages over large groups, he said.
"There are multiple examples of very bright conservatives and not-so-bright liberals, and many examples of very principled conservatives and very intolerant liberals," Hodson said.
Nosek gave another example to illustrate the dangers of taking the findings too literally."
"We can say definitively men are taller than women on average," he said. "But you can't say if you take a random man and you take a random woman that the man is going to be taller. There's plenty of overlap."
Also
"My speculation is that it's not as simple as their model presents it," Nosek said. "I think that lower cognitive capacity can lead to multiple simple ways to represent the world, and one of those can be embodied in a right-wing ideology where 'People I don't know are threats' and 'The world is a dangerous place'. ... Another simple way would be to just assume everybody is wonderful."0 -
he still stands wrote:SweetChildofMine wrote:he still stands wrote:if you view yourself and others like you as morally and spiritually superior than any other subgroup, and furthermore you think that gives you a right to tell others how to behave in society or in their bedrooms, you are a social conservative. I think it is pretty easy to infer that lower intelligence (and I certainly think a sort of neurosis) is a prequisitie to this ethnocentric viewpoint on the private lives of others. It seems like we should have gotten past social conservatism in the 50's when black people were able to drink from the same fountain as me...
I don't know about your statement that one "should be an empathetic life teacher" rather than a moral fascist... it is more about just accepting everyone for who they are and keeping your nose out of their business (or their bladder contents, or their bedroom, or their doctor's office, etc)
Moral factors that is by saying its "wrong" isn't a good enough argument.0 -

There's no reference to extremist views. From the OP, for example, like whether or not you agree with "I wouldn't mind working with people from other races." That's not extremist, it's just designed to reveal prejudice. The point of the OP is that there's a correlation between having a low IQ, being conservative, and being prejudice. Too add to it, the less education someone has, the more likely they are to vote Republican.
It was in the article, I quoted it. And I agree with it.hippiemom = goodness0 -

It was in the article because they had to have a quote to the contrary of the study. It doesn't mean the person who said it is correct. An extremist view is something like "blacks and gays need to be shipped to their own island".0 -

Do you think prejudice people are just sprinkled around randomly? What the study is suggesting is that prejudice people are more likely to be in the two spheres of low intelligence and social conservatism. Whether that puts a whole group of people down is up to you.0 -

BINGO!!
Why Go Home is exactly right. The Conservative party of Canada Would line up with the Democratic party in the U.S.
The Gop in the U.S. is basically a radical right wing party that is getting closer and closer to being the mirror image of the religious extremist political groups in the middle east.0 -

but you and a few others are using this "..study ?" like a weapon to intimidate or at least toss insults at others on this board........ ummm in dashing troll fashion I might add, it ain't working man..hang it up nobody want's to play that game.

I don't have the attention span to read the article, but I think I tend to agree with the title of the thread. I come across more dumb conservatives than I do dumb liberals.
Generalizations for large groups aren't usually a good idea, though. Here's one: Liberals are meaner than conservatives. The only people we should try to get even with...
...are those who've helped us.
Right 'round the corner could be bigger than ourselves.0 -

Living where I live now, there are more dumb liberals than conservatives. Where I lived previously, there were more dumb conservatives than liberals.
Why? Because there were more conservatives where I formerly lived and more liberals where I currently live.hippiemom = goodness0 -

then :? this I will not believe
but some only see the others as biased not themselves... this the irony
people don't understand me when I say I love someone though I do not agree
with their core beliefs at all ... I do not have to agree, I do not become disgusted
or biased or even feel they are wrong for their beliefs. I love them.
They have their path, their time to learn, their right.
Does that make me smarter
I'm sure most here would think that laughable including me...
point ... one can not be prejudice in the presence of love and understanding.
It has little to do with brains and a whole lot to do with the heart.
For me biased people come from hating those not like themselves,
not even attempting to love and understand those of a different opinion or group.
These for me are the true ignorant people on each side of every issue.
Where does this rigidness come from? I don't know.
Sprinkled about? If you mean don't label a group then yes.
I think all people are sprinkled about, generalizations are an easy way out,
no need to understand, just group and hate.
I was raised without prejudice, my life experiences have brought
many people to me to love of all persuasions and I just don't see any of the lines anymore.
Not everyone has had this in their lives and not everyone wants it.
How many feel as I here ... a whole lot I think
give everyone time to find the love to accept each other ...
it will come
in the meantime both sides perhaps can be kind
it's the first step to love and understanding0 -
