    from the article:

Year after year, the people of the United States remain blissfully unaware that, as in so many other places around the world, our military occupation of Okinawa is ruining people's lives.

not true. no blissfull ignorance. We won the war. My grandpa, a Marine, took a bullet in Okinawa. I say we stay.

Imagine, however, just for a moment, that even one Japanese military base existed in the United States, and imagine that even one Japanese soldier committed a single crime. Can you imagine some things that U.S. television talking heads might say?

Can't imagine that. We won the war.

The Constitution that the United States imposed on Japan 65 years ago forbids war preparation, yet the United States trains its forces in Japan to fight wars elsewhere in the world.

    We won the war.

    I prefer "defeated the enemy".
I don't think you win anything when killing hundreds of thousands, even as necessary as it might have seemed.

How long do you suggest we stay there with these bases? is there a period of time that must pass before we can remove our presence from an area that we fought against? How many countries do we military bases in?

This whole thing is just asanine...and people wonder why there are those out there who wish to do harm to America. It's because we never LISTEN to their concerns and just trample over them. "Our way or the highway" has never been a good motto when trying to win the hearts and minds of others. It is time we leave all these bases that don't do much more than create potential for more blowback against the US.

this is a great post. that is our problem. we do not listen to what other countries try to tell us. our arrogance and know-it-all attitude make it impossible to hear the concerns of other countries. and even if we actually hear what they are saying, they will never convince us to honor their wishes. sometimes the only way to get someone's attention is a suckerpunch to the nose, and that is what 9/11 was. and yet we have learned nothing from that punch in the nose. it is just insanity to me...

We probably have over 700 military bases around the world, can you imagine how much it costs just to sustain that many??? http://www.alternet.org/story/47998/

Chalmers Johnson author of Sorrows Of The Empire speaks freely on our military and what he says here is ABSOLUTELY the TRUTH!...

Wow, GunderP, thanks for that info. Its amazing, and just more clarification of how/why we spend a considerable amount more than any other country in the world on military.

But it doesnt end there! If newt is elected, we'll take over the moon too! ;)

Did you notice in the above maps we the US don't have any military bases in countries with nuclear weapons
. Nothing in India, China, Russia or in most countries without a vital natural resource we need. I wonder why that is or is that we just can't be a bully to the entire world?
