With mix of old, new and (a cover of) Young, Pearl Jam rocks the Tweeter

Even in the midst of a crowded concert venue -- this weekend, it’s the Tweeter Center in Camden, N.J. -- Vedder makes people who paid to get in feel right at home, inviting them to sing with him, bowing to them and letting them drink from his ubiquitous bottle of red wine.
It’s one of the factors that has helped Pearl Jam build a devoted following over the past 15 years, while generally eschewing music videos and other publicity generators.
Three songs into Saturday’s show, during “Do The Evolution,” 25,000 fans raised their hands as if they were in church, singing, “Hallelujah,” after Vedder sang, “There’s my church, I sing in the choir.” Fans also sang entire verses, even taking over spontaneously when he forgot the words to “Given To Fly.”
Before “Better Man,” he told fans, “We invite you to be part of the band. Take over for me,” as the crowd began the familiar opening lines, “Waitin’, watchin’ the clock, it’s four o’clock, it’s got to stop/Tell him, take no more, she practices her speech/As he opens the door, she rolls over...”
In between songs, Vedder toasted the crowd and even passed his bottle of wine around to fans in the front row before taking it back for a swig of his own.
Apparently, there are no cooties among Jamily members.
While some old songs like “Daughter” floundered a bit, new numbers like “Unemployable” and “World Wide Suicide” stepped up, giving the band new go-to songs to add to its repertoire. In all, the band played seven songs from its self-titled new album.
It’s been 15 years since the group’s debut, “Ten,” was released. That means that Pearl Jam’s college-aged fans, which made up at least half of the crowd, were in short pants when the first listeners were introduced to Vedder, jumping off a balcony in the video for “Even Flow.”
But Pearl Jam’s steady, quality output has kept new fans coming in. Its newest album has been getting the group’s best reviews in years, and live shows continue to be tiny slices of American music history in the making.
Among the highlight’s of Saturday’s show was a cover of Neil Young’s “Rockin’ In The Free World.” Given the group’s history with the the “Godfather of Grunge,” that was no surprise, but, as always, it was a standout moment -- with Vedder channeling Young’s anger. And it wasn’t the first time Young was heard at the show: Pearl Jam had Young’s haunting “On the Beach” playing before the 2-1/2 hour set started.
For tonight’s show doors open at 7:30 p.m.. Unfortunately, the show is sold out. But like last night, scalpers will be everywhere.
