They had this debate in AZ after the Panthers crushed the Cards. Using record as a qualifier and only after league went to 16 game schedule as part of the debate. 2 teams have gone 18-1 while winning a super bowl (84 49ers and 85 Bears). Pats don't count since they lost the big one that 18-1 year. The consesus is Panthers are 3rd. That Bears team probably goes first with the 49ers a close second. Both had all time greats on them which elevates their status. 49ers had Montana and Lott (Rice was drafted later) and Bears had Payton and the best defense ever. This Carolina team is missing those all timers to compete with the other 2.

To me that's what makes this Panthers team so interesting. But who knows, maybe in a few years Cam Newton will be seen as an elite all time player.

They will be the best team this year. That's all you can really say about any team. It's all about matchups. The best team doesn't always win the Super Bowl.

Though I think you could argue for a couple of other teams that didn't go 18-1 being better all time than this year's Panthers...

    78 Steelers
    88 49ers
    91 Redskins
    03 Patriots
    04 Patriots

All 17-2, arguable they may have played tougher competition, but history will bear that out.

Carolina only had wins over three teams that finished over .500 and two of those teams were the Texans and Redskins.

I noticed they had an easy schedule but I didn't realize it was that bad. However, they beat the hell out of the Seahawks and Cardinals.

what about the Cowboys with Aiken, Smith and Irvin? probably 1992 was their best team and I think better than this Carolina team.

Did Steve Young relieve Montana in garbage time of SB XXIV? He only has the one as a starter. That feels like a reach.

First reaction is to put Eli higher but looking at who is in front of him I'm not sure how or where.

Would probably flip Montana and Aikman.

He was 2 for 3 for 20 yards and had 6 rushing yards. Probably fell just short of Montana in MVP voting for the game.

Montana has the late comeback wins that Aikmen doesn't have. I have no issue with Aikmen but also believe Montana was higher.

I also don't think you can compare these older players and teams to new teams. No free agency back then but also the league was much more brutal. Could you imagine Brady with all his bitching to the refs everytime he gets touched playing in Lawrence Taylor's and Charles Haley's era? Haley wanted to kill you on every snap. Taylor would have snapped Brady in half. If Montana played in todays game he would have been able to play until he was 40 like Manning/Brady since he wouldn't have defenders breaking his back like he did.

And did you notice how the NFL announced before the AFC championship game that they were going to release the report/findings but as soon as the Patriots lost, the story and the release of the information, well, it just kind of went away. Yea, right, Roger Goodell and the NFL, neutral arbitrators of the truth.

Nothing like a contrived controversy for the 2 weeks leading up to the super bowl to potentially influence the outcome so you don't have to hand the trophy to the GOAT.
