This is an old favorite of mine I wrote I sing to friends. Need to learn to play guitar so I can actually put it on you tube.

Janie put Tommy to bed about nine o'clock in the evening.
He asked where she's going, she said, "Don't worry son."
And with the boy sound asleep she slips out into the evening.
For if that child is to eat there is much work to be done.

Janie works the three truck stops in the Pennsylvania town of Carisle.
Where traffic from the Penn Turnpike switches over to I-81.
She spends her nights for a fee with men who are weary and lonely.
But one night she picked the wrong one and Janie didn't come home.

And Tommy don't have no mommy no more.
And it's hard to explain to a boy the age of four.
Exactly what they mean when they call his mommy a whore.
And that she can't come home and he can't see her anymore.

I stopped by in Carisle about ten o'clock in the evening.
A girl jumped up onto the truck and I told her to go get lost.
A little dissappointed, she slipped off into the evening.
I went inside to shower and eat and didn't give her another thought.

On the way home from Allentown I saw the pictures of Janie.
I had seen her face though her name wasn't known to me
I later learned I was among the last to see her around
Before her body was in the Susquehanna* found.

* The Susquehanna River, about 30 miles east of Carisle.
