  • In fourth or fifth grade, I bought pro basketball cards for the first time and then I found the addresses of the teams from the NBA guide and sent them away to get them autographed. This was during the 1988-89, 1989-90, 1990-91 seasons.

The Celtics asked for a donation for the Larry Bird foundation from a 10-year-old kid.
The Knicks gave me a pocket schedule and a postcard
The Nets signed the cards of some really bad players
The Sixers gave me bumper stickers
The Bullets gave me bumper stickers.
The Hornets gave me bumper stickers.
The Magic gave me bumper stickers, clearly they were overwhelmed by those seeking Jeff Turner's autograph

The Pistons signed, so I have cards signed by Isiah Thomas, Bill Laimbeer, Dennis Rodman etc
The Bulls gave me bumper stickers
The Cavaliers gave me bumper stickers
The Hawks gave me bumper stickers
The Pacers signed and put my last name on the back of the card and this was when Reggie Miller was in his first few years.
The Bucks did not sign but politely told me that Ricky Pierce had been traded.

The Jazz did not sign but gave me a pocket schedule which alerted me to the fact that every time they score 100 points, fans get free fries from Hardee's. For what it's worth, they scored 100 points 51 times that year.
    The Rockets signed
The Mavericks gave me some bumper stickers.
The Spurs gave me a postcard reminding me they were division winners in David Robinson's rookie season
    The Heat gave me nothing

The Lakers were the best, during the 1990-91 season, they gave me a complete sheet of paper with all the signatures and not just the players but the trainer, the coaching staff and Chick Hearn. It also was Magic Johnson's last full season, so obviously that was pretty cool for someone in elementary school.
The Clippers also signed, including Charles Smith, who signed the card "Charles Fluid Smith". Too bad he wasn't that fluid in Game Five of the 1993 Eastern Conference finals.
The Sonics did not sign, gave me a bumper sticker with their cool logo
The Kings did not sign, but who really wanted a Harold Pressley autograph anyways.
The Trail Blazers did sign and that package featured signatures on Clyde Drexler's card as well as Jerome Kersey and Kevin Duckworth.
The Warriors did not sign, which was too bad since that was the years of Run-Tmc.

So based on that, I'd probably like the Lakers, Blazers, Clippers, Nets, Pistons and Pacers the most.

Speaking of shit tons, we always speculated that if we held onto our cards long enough they would be great for wiping our asses.

I have a pretty small collection of cards. These are a couple of the more memorable ones from back then.

    cansecodon.jpg..... jetertp.jpg
    '86 Donruss #39 Jose Canseco (R)................'93 Topps #98 Derek Jeter (R)

    mrheaume.png...............cjonesds.jpg
'92 Classic #224 Manon Rheaume (R)...........'91 Topps Desert Shield #333 Chipper Jones (R)

And, yes, I still have them all. I can't quite figure out which is funnier, the Canseco or Rheaume?? I also have the Topps Gold variant of the Jeter rookie. The TDS Chipper Jones is probably the only card I have that has any value whatsoever.
