I'm not a compter teck or geek by any stretch but since this is your second request I'd recommend you check to see if your wireless is even showing up on the laptops list of available sources (i.e. do you see your net work under connections?). If not then your comp is not (for some reason) picking it up. Faulty card?

If you are seeing the wireless and you can't connect try downloading (through ethernet connection) a new software to help. Try C-Net for some options.

    Good Luck!
  • sorry if this is a simple response and I mean no offense by it, but sometimes you need to start troubleshooting with the easy stuff...do you have a wifi 'button' somewhere on your laptop? Maybe you hit it by accident and turned off your WiFi?
Second would be if you are password protected and maybe your profile somehow was erased and you need to go back and re-enter the password?
Not an IT guy but work for an IT service company (sales) and sometimes the most simple errors are what cause issues.
    Good luck!

Are all the IP settings set on 'automatic'?

If you connect via cable and go Start > run > cmd > and then type in 'ipconfig', do you get a gateway address?

  • Have you tried going to Control Panel > Network and Sharing > (on left) "Manage Wireless Networks".. Select your wireless network, Right click > Remove it....then close everything and try reconnecting to it again from the beginning?

  • what shows up when you go to "Manage wireless networks"? there should be a list of wireless networks available and/or the ones youve connected to

In the Network and Sharing Center click on Diagnose and Repair. Run that and see if it comes up with anything.

  • sometimes vendors wifi application conflict with Windows built in wifi. Have you tried uninstalling vendors (ie Netgear ) applications and use built in Windows only? They would be in your Start> programs list

i have a sony vaio with vista, too...i can no longer connect to wifi, either...though the boyfriends lappy does fine and so do both of our phones. i actually had to connect the modem to the router, and then the router to my PC to get internet to work. going straight from modem to PC didnt work anymore, either. IDK why...and since i rarely use it as anything other than a desktop, i don't usually think too much of it to do any further research.

prolly not much help to you, but you can try it and see if you get an internet connection that way, which may be better than nothing if you need to use it, and i will revisit this thread when i get home to see if anyone's suggestions might help me with my issue, too!

other than this, its been a good PC and my favorite of all i have had so far ;)

How old is the laptop? It is possible that the wireless adapter is shot. Cheapest solution would be to buy a USB wireless adapter as an actual internal Sony one may cost a lot if you can still get it. That is if its not soldered on the board.

mine is 4 years old...had thought about a wireless USB, but since i rarely port her anywhere with me, I don't remember to think about it very often. curious how old the OP's is, as well...maybe this is a common vaio thing for lappys of a certain age...

I will try and help the best I can.. Can you go to the start menu. Go to the area that says "run" and type in "cmd" This will bring up a DOS prompt box. In this box type in "ipconfig /all" and paste the output to me so I can see it. We can take it from there. Thanks!
