  • i agree. certainly heartbreaker is one of the best albums of the 2000's. My favorite of his is Love is Hell. Thats a great one. The one i'd most associate with Heartbreaker is the followup Gold. the amount of material the guy has released is pretty astonishing. From 2000 until 2011 he released a total of 13 albums. incredible lyricist.

Honestly, i'd investigate the whole Ryan Adams catalogue.

i get so delirious just thinking about ryan adams. OP i think try easy tiger and whiskeytowns strangers almanac. if you can get ahold of the deluxe reissue of SA, do it.... the extra disc is awesome.

Cold Roses is one of my favorite albums of all time. Start to finish just great songwriting.

Can't go wrong with Love Is Hell and Jacksonville City Nights too.

I'm a huge Ryan fan and pretty much like all his stuff.

Dude, it is in your best interest to check out everything he has.

Whiskeytown has some fantastic albums in Strangers Almanac and Faithless Street.

Ryan's solo stuff is spectacular as well. As someone else said, Love is Hell is my favorite as well, but Gold, Easy Tiger, and Demolition are also great. The only album of his I haven't heard is 29.

He also has something that hasn't bee officially released I don't believe, but if you can find it I highly recommend getting a copy of it somehow, it is called Pinkhearts Vol. 2.

Then, you haven't even touched on Ryan Adams & The Cardinals. Cold Roses is an absolute must, as well as their EP Follow The Lights.

I'm also going to recommend a Willie Nelson album called Songbird. It was produced by Ryan and features him and The Cardinals as Willie's backing band. Truly a wonderful record.

Enjoy listening, Ryan is one of the greatest songwriters of the past 15-20 years in my opinion.

Maybe it was something else that I checked out a few months ago, but whatever it was (can't remember the song or album) but it was way too poppy for me. I love his newest one and Heartbreaker because it's just him and an acoustic guitar. Love that stuff.

He does have some stuff that I can see being too poppy for some. He kind of reminds me of Paul Westerberg in that way. In fact, I really think that Ryan shows an influence from PW and The Replacements.

certainly im not going to argue with the OP, as exploring the dischography of ryan adams is highly recommended. but the word poppy is not something i'd even say in the same breath as Ryan adams. not that pop is bad. i'd argue thats probably harder to write a pop tune than a indie/rock tune. but part of what makes ryan adams so brilliant is he is a true artist. follows his muse no matter what that is, and no matter what anyone else may say. but the guy has explored everything from alt country, to death/heavy metal to softer sounds just him and the acoustic guitar. i think he's alot like dylan or neil young in that respect, he has tried and done a ton of different styles and genres, yet no matter what he does its always brilliant. he hates being pigeonholed. Plus he's a guy thats beloved yet really isnt popular. probably his two biggest hits are maybe on the poppy side New York New York and When the Stars Go Blue but even those, they are popular and hits for a reason: they are damn good

Either "Heartbreaker" or "Gold" are a good place to start. If you ever get a chance to see him live, go.

    I'm a big fan of this... http://www.megaupload.com/?d=60U21WJ8
It's called the Suicide Handbook. It's a primarily depressing collection of songs which, when combined with a few other unreleased albums, would form the album Demolition. Generally stuff with a similar sombre, introspective feel to Heartbreaker and Ashes & Fire, I would quickly recommend this 'album' to anyone.
In addition, for country music lovers, Jacksonville City Nights is a stellar album, which features Dear John, which was written and recorded with Norah Jones and is a gorgeous track.
Also, 29 is a primarily acoustic album, with the exception of the title track. Night Birds and Carolina Rain are stand-out tracks for me on that one.

that is exactly what I'm looking for! Thank you! I listened to the first couple of track of Easy Tiger and it's okay. Not exactly what I was hoping for, but I'm not giving up on it. I'm going to check out 29 though

Easy Tiger, for me, just reads as far too typical of an album. The thing about Ryan Adams is that, while on paper he is prolific, producing album after album after album, his quality control seems to be lacking, and it almost feels sometimes like he is releasing something because it's been a while and he ought to. You could probably condense his entire album catalog and produce maybe 5 or 6 great albums, and a few really good EPs, rather than the 13 he has released at this point. Another thing is that he is a great live artist, and many tracks on Easy Tiger I have seen live, and translate far better to that setting than an album one.
