'Akira' the Comic and Anime Film, It's some really great work by Katsuhiro Otomo, I personally first got in touch with the series after watching the Anime Movie on Lazer Disc in 1989 :geek:
The movie was solid and it looked amazing, the whole feel of the movie was also very intense. But It's not a flawless Film, it was perhaps a bit too condensed. But nevertheless still good.

(Volume 1)
-On December 6, 1992, an apparent nuclear explosion destroys Tokyo and starts World War III. By 2030, a new metropolis called Neo-Tokyo has been built on an artificial island in Tokyo Bay, but is gripped by anti-government terrorism and gang violence.
--
Hollywood has been trying to make this into a live action film for 10 years, they just delayed it again over the script/budget issues...They apparently want Jonathan Nolan or Michael Green to re/write touch it up.
I really hope it's kept as close to the original Manga series as possible. I also hope the Japanese Characters are not Whitewashed.
That's all I ask!
Better yet, just leave the series alone.

Akira Movie Shut Down (Again)
Warners reportedly sends the crew packing.
Warner Bros.' live-action retelling of Akira has reportedly been shut down -- for the fourth time in its long development history.
"The project, which has been through several incarnations, is being shut down in the face of casting and budgetary issues. The production offices in Vancouver are being closed, with below-the-line talent and crew told to stop working," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Rupert Sanders to direct Hollywood remake of Ghost in the Shell
Steven Spielberg's Dreamworks are set to remake the seminal Japanese anime as a live-action English-language movie

But back to Akira...this is quite scary
Hollywood has a troubled history when it comes to anime remakes. Warner Brothers' plans for a live action take on 1988 cyberpunk classic Akira are currently mired in development hell. The studio had at one point reportedly planned a version starring High School Musical's Zac Efron and Twilight's Robert Pattinson in the key roles of Kaneda and Tetsuo .
(To even consider them...yikes!)
