What about a Rail Yard?

We all seem to agree that there's been a train wreck here. The economy is in ruins, politics gone haywire, education (at least here in America) at an all-time low and the fabric that holds it all together- the health of the planet- is in peril. Most of us agree that these are all big problems but by throwing the same arguments back and forth are we making any difference here?

Maybe instead of a moving train, we need a rail yard. A place to fix all these things that are breaking down.

    Not everybody is in a position to work to fix these problems, but I see posters here like Unsung who seems to be working on helping the Ron Paul campaign, others involved in education, or maybe even someone who is just working to reduce their carbon footprint. Many are serious about these things and might be trying to help make a change. If not, the worst case is that maybe we're exposed to these topics and at least we're not completely oblivious to what's going on in the world, despite whether or not we can do something to help.
    Pick up my debut novel here on amazon: Jonny Bails Floatin (in paperback) (also available on Kindle for $2.99)

    the first thing in solving a problem is agreeing there is a problem and what that problem actually is ... that's where the moving train falters ...

    the problem on AMT from the looks of what I have been reading...it's hypocrisy...people can dish it out, but not take it...and if you don't want it...don't give it...again my opinion, all can ignore me...I'm okay with that.
    Lots of love, light and hugs to you all!

    well ... there are lots of problems ... haha ... but ya - that is one of them ... ultimately tho, we can't fix things if we don't acknowledge they are problems ...

    It is true that few of us here are in a position to make noticeable changes in the world but I'm very confident in believing every one of us can do something to help and even more sure that collectively we can make a big difference. Every letter or phone call you make to you representatives has the impact of one hundred voices. Imagine that! What if everyone of us reduced out carbon output by 10% and persuaded one other person to do the same? What if we all tithed 10% of our income and-- better yet-- our energies to making positive social and environmental change?

    Here are some encouraging words from Paul Westerberg that might inspire a little positive motion:

    Well personally i'm out of here, i'll still post in threads like Anceint Aleins or Enviromental threads but no more politics for me. I'm too sensitive to what i think is right and why everybody else doesn't get it, when i see RED, i just turn into a Dick and want to crush the offending poster. I think it's the upcoming election, and my age (37), every single thing just seems so important all of a sudden, it's kills me that i cant control the world. Just because my temperment doesnt meld well with the AMT, doesnt for a second take away from the fact that this place is Gold. I've learned more (and will continue to) from people here than any other news site on the web. I've had my mind changed and informed more times than i can count. In Real Life i (almost)always have the best of intentions when talking to somebody/anybody, but there's something about winning an argument that becomes intensely important in the virtual world. Anyway keep up the good work everybody, there are some insanly intelligent people on here, i look forward to the future.

    It's great in theory Brian, I just think that with as negative as this crowd tends to be, few of us would be contributing to actual solution-based ideas. :(

    It's easy to be negative in this world- even understandable, I believe. Look what a disaster the human race has created! But positive thinking and the desire to make good things happen can be contagious. The more we think and act positively , the more we do what make senses no matter how things turn out, the more we want to think and act that way and the more others around us want to think that way and visa-vera. We can spiral down to hell or we can lift each other up. I'm voting for up.

    This is as good a place to do that as any. This is a great place to share ideas, to give and gain support. Let's all of us refuse to get dragged down by negative thinking and do something good for someone else and for the planet. Maybe in the end the whole thing will fall to pieces but doing something positive can only help.

    Edit: screw it what I just said. I'm not getting sucked into the negative void.

    Positive, that's me! Anyone else? " Why the hell else are we here". :thumbup:

    I just get frustrated that all the negative threads get more contributions that the positive ones. More people need to start thinking differently!

    I think we can achieve a more positive forum!

    But we just need to avoid the following topics:

    * Gun laws
    * Abortion
    * Israel / Palestine
    * Religion
    * Gay rights
    * Death penalty
    * Global warming
    * Walmart
    * President Obama
    * George Bush
    * Unpeople

    Oh, and the Chicago Bulls. :D

    But really, we just need to avoid calling plays from the respective conservative / liberal playbooks and debate / form our own opinions. And when people who agree with our opinions start to be mean to others, we should call them out.

    That is probably a very good idea. No one is changing their opinion on this topic. No one. So why "debate" it?

    I think we can still debate how religious ideals affect the world, but topics on the existence of God only fuel mean spirited discussions.

    Thank you Jeanwah and Jason P for civil dialog. We might just make some progress and conserve what's left of civility here on the train.

    (Notice my oh so subtle way of sneaking in references to progressives and conservatives- ;) -. We're all in it together.)

    Down. Fall by the wayside no getting out.
    Down. Cry me a river dried up and dammed.
    The names can be changed but the place is still the same.
    I am loaded. Told that all's for naught. Holds me down.

    Rise. Life is in motion. I'm stuck in line.
    Rise. You can't be neutral on a moving train.
    One day the symptoms fade. Think I'll throw these pills away.
    And if hope could grow from dirt like me. It can be done.

    Won't let the light escape from me.
    Won't let the darkness swallow me.

    So long.
