No one beats Neil's version, but I do enjoy DMB's version, especially when they enlist Warren Haynes to help! Fantastic version indeed.

Not really a DMB fan, but my cousin is and I saw them twice with him last year down in WPB and they did this song with Haynes on night (along with Needle...) - it's safe to say that those were my two highlights of the two shows

Also, if you haven't already heard this, all-time favorite Dave covering Neil moment: Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds covering Down By The River from Live at Radio City: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1Q8DvujeCY

Friends of mine doing a version of Cortez in an Edinburgh pub, not sure what the regulars thought, but I enjoyed it.
Also not sure what reaction I'll get if they find out I've shared it on here, but what the hell...enjoy

Neil's version on the Weld VHS is pretty damn good. just like grumpy ol' Neil that he won't put it out on DVD or blu-ray. that tour (1991?) was one of the best shows I have seen in my entire life. top 5, easy.

They've done it a few times without him, here's an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42MQ1icj3Z0
I do believe they also covered it at an old Bridge School performance without Warren!

Neil's version is amazing of course. I've not heard the dmb yet, but I'm pretty partial to Built to Spill's cover.

  • Was there. Trust me when I say that song was one of the greatest tunes ever in a live concert. A flat out jam session that rocked. These dudes next to me were yelling Cortez out nearly every song break from up on the hill (the band never heard them). When they started playing it... well, you can guess their reaction. It must have been great for them.

DMB also played a great 'Good Times Bad Times' cover as well that night. Some people on this forum like to bash the band... but they are fantastic- one of my faves for sure. While they are all great musicians, Carter's drumming is pretty damn special (kind of a cross between Stewart Copeland and John Bonham).

I posted a comment on this video a few years ago that didn't go down too well. I even received a PM on YouTube from a guy ranting at me about "You've got Mike McCready banging on a tinny acoustic and singing out of tune, but Warren Haynes and Dave Matthews are "awful"? Fascinating." blah blah blah.. Apparently I wasn't supposed to have an opinion on the DMB video that he didn't agree with.

I just did a search through the comments and found "this comment has received too many negative votes" next to it! Oh well :)
