Someone started a HUM thread, and that got me thinking about the lesser-known bands from the early to mid 1990's. A few of my favorites:

    Teenage Fanclub
    Ned's Atomic Dustbin
    Charlatans (UK)
    Mary's Danish
    Thelonious Monster
    Voice of the Beehive

    Add: Belly

Ned's!! I was a huge fan..shame they broke up so quickly.

The reunited a few years back. I think they toured in the UK (wish they would have toured in the states).

    I'll add also:

    L7
    Spacehog
    Better Than Ezra
Toad The Wet Sprocket??? (maybe not lesser known, but i'm adding them)

*someone mentioned The Lemonheads and Pixies. I wouldn't really consider them "lesser known" but then again i said Pavement which someone thought shouldn't be on here. Oh well.

2nd on Mary's Danish and Thelonious Monster.

One of the best shows I've ever seen was a benefit for the bass player for Marys Danish at the Hollywood Palladium. Mary's Danish, Thelonious Monster, Beastie Boys, and RHCP. Still have the Kings hat that Mike D threw out in the crowd.

I'd also add Concrete Blonde and the Samples.

I was at that show as well!...the Reconstructive Hip-hop

The Palladium hosted some amazing benefit shows in the 90s:

Magic Johnson AIDS Foundation Benefit in 1992
This was Porno For Pryos' very first concert. Fishbone, Rollins Band, Primus, The Beastie Boys (first time seeing them play instruments!) and The Red Hot Chili Peppers . Vlade Divac did a stage dive!

Nutmeglomaniac - benefit for Norwood Fisher legal fees:
Joining Fishbone at the 7 p.m. show will be Alice in Chains, which is expected to preview material from its forthcoming Columbia acoustic EP, "Jar of Flies"; Porno for Pyros,. band led by Lollapalooza co-organizer Perry Farrell; Bay Area rock/fusion trio Primus (Interscope); Zoo Entertainment buzz band Tool. People were booing AIC because they played acoustic on stools!

    and

MAP Benefit - 1999The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Eddie Vedder, and Perry Farrell are among the musicians that have signed on for a special benefit concert being held on June 25 at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles. Others coming out for the special one-off include bassist extraordinaire Mike Watt and Bob Forrest with the Bicycle Thief.

Didn't see any of those other shows, but did see Fishbone at the Palladium w/ Madness. I think Pandoras opened the show. Another great one.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

They had a couple hits but nothing really came from them. They still make great music.
I thought I read some where that their lead singer is now a professor at UGA

Jayhawks - Who are currently touring with their original lineup for the first time in around 15 years. Been waiting to see this lineup since I missed them on the Tomorrow the Green Grass tour. 23 more days...

Widespread Panic.  A band that I felt was on the verge of finally breaking big after building momentum in the 90's until guitarist Michael Houser died of pancreatic cancer.  Such a shame and what a great live band from 1989 to 2002!
