Someone started a HUM thread, and that got me thinking about the lesser-known bands from the early to mid 1990's. A few of my favorites:
Teenage Fanclub
Ned's Atomic Dustbin
Charlatans (UK)
Mary's Danish
Thelonious Monster
Voice of the Beehive
Add: Belly

I added them to my list....great mix of buzzing guitars and Tanya's innocent voice!
I love Pavement! Saw them at the Hollywood Bowl on their last tour. Wasnt sure they were lesser-known, but maybe they are just popular out here in LA.
Saw S&The Bs at the first Lolla way back when as well. Good choices!
I loved those guys. Not just Three Little Pigs, but the whole Cereal Killer Soundtrack was fantastic for what it was. And thanks to Green Jello we now have TOOL, so that's pretty awesome. They actually just released a new album like a year or two ago, their first one in like 15 years. It wasn't very good though.

They had a couple hits but nothing really came from them. They still make great music.

Ned's!! I was a huge fan..shame they broke up so quickly.
One of the best shows I've ever seen was a benefit for the bass player for Marys Danish at the Hollywood Palladium. Mary's Danish, Thelonious Monster, Beastie Boys, and RHCP. Still have the Kings hat that Mike D threw out in the crowd.
I'd also add Concrete Blonde and the Samples.

I was at that show as well!...the Reconstructive Hip-hop
The Palladium hosted some amazing benefit shows in the 90s:
Magic Johnson AIDS Foundation Benefit in 1992
This was Porno For Pryos' very first concert. Fishbone, Rollins Band, Primus, The Beastie Boys (first time seeing them play instruments!) and The Red Hot Chili Peppers . Vlade Divac did a stage dive!
Nutmeglomaniac - benefit for Norwood Fisher legal fees:
Joining Fishbone at the 7 p.m. show will be Alice in Chains, which is expected to preview material from its forthcoming Columbia acoustic EP, "Jar of Flies"; Porno for Pyros,. band led by Lollapalooza co-organizer Perry Farrell; Bay Area rock/fusion trio Primus (Interscope); Zoo Entertainment buzz band Tool. People were booing AIC because they played acoustic on stools!
and
MAP Benefit - 1999The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Eddie Vedder, and Perry Farrell are among the musicians that have signed on for a special benefit concert being held on June 25 at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles. Others coming out for the special one-off include bassist extraordinaire Mike Watt and Bob Forrest with the Bicycle Thief.

The reunited a few years back. I think they toured in the UK (wish they would have toured in the states).
I'll add also:
L7
Spacehog
Better Than Ezra
Toad The Wet Sprocket??? (maybe not lesser known, but i'm adding them)
*someone mentioned The Lemonheads and Pixies. I wouldn't really consider them "lesser known" but then again i said Pavement which someone thought shouldn't be on here. Oh well.

Pond was great.

YES!!!! Great band, I dug out their album Sun Is Often Out a little while back, absolutely crammed with good stuff.
Didn't see any of those other shows, but did see Fishbone at the Palladium w/ Madness. I think Pandoras opened the show. Another great one.
