For those who don't know them or are not really sure what they are all about:

Yeah, sometimes the lyrics lose me a little bit, but the band is awesome. Musically they're like Tool meets Radiohead meets Rush meets Pink Floyd. This video (part 1 of 2) is a great example of how tight and powerful they are, especially live. If you are a big drum fan, watch their drummer in this..his beats and mini fills all over the place are out of control.

  • Thanks for the link. I've been meaning to listen to these guys for quite some time now (seriously, like 10 years). I love the music but I just can't get over the guys voice. He reminds me of Peter Gabriel. Not in a good way. Do you have any other songs you could recommend? I really want to listen to more than just one song before I write them off but I don't know where to start.

    Thanks.

I don't find his voice to be irritating at all (nor do I find Peter Gabriel's voice annoying). It's pretty standard, in my mind.

I don't think it's annoying, I just don't like it and Peter Gabriel was what came to mind. Thanks for the new links. I'll check them out.

After listening to the three links above, I'm going to have to go exploring. This stuff is great. Thanks for the heads up. I think I'll look around their studio stuff first though before I venture back into their live stuff.

This first one is great. A lot like APC...very cool. I like this much better than the first clip. Not sure if it's because it's just a totally different style of song of if it's studio as opposed to the live link you first posted but I think this one is better than the first (in my noob opinion anyways)

ASBNH is probably my favorite PT song.

I don't think these guys sound particularly like any of the bands you mentioned.

Spacy doesn't equal Pink Floyd or Radiohead
Heavy with progressive tendencies doesn't equal Tool or Rush

They're ok in short spurts, but I don't find it very satisfying.

I don't agree with the Radiohead or for the most part, Floyd either but I do think there is a lot of Tool in there (in the heavy songs anyways) and I don't know enough about Rush to comment. I do think it has a prog-rock, APC feel to it, I like it. I'm going to look into them a bit more for sure.

I was going to go with Wham meets Metallica meets Jackyl meets Flock of Seagulls, but I couldn't quite pull it all together.

Porcupine Tree has been one of my favorite bands for a many years now. They tend to go through stages with 2 or 3 albums. I've seen them live 5 times, each time was awesome. For early stuff, check out the 2 disc live album, Coma Divine.
  • i've been meaning to get more of their albums. I have one in my car (cant remember which one), and its pretty awesome.
Pick up my debut novel here on amazon: Jonny Bails Floatin (in paperback) (also available on Kindle for $2.99)
  • Love PT! one of these days ill get to see them. i just saw steve wilson has a new record out.. i havent heard it yet, just wondering if anyone has heard it? also if you like PT, there is a band called abigals ghost that sounds just like them, maybe not as spacey as PT though...

I just got interested in these guys a few weeks ago, and I would say his voice is neither irritating nor inspiring... well, sometimes it does work pretty well, depending on the song. I definitely caught a Peter Gabriel-esque feel to it too. Instrumentally, they are a force, and they seem to understand that this is their strength.

Grace For Drowning is ok. It's very experimental with a lot of 70's prog in there. I was hoping I would love the album but I don't. I do wish I saw the tour for this album in November but I missed it. I always try to catch Steven Wilson when he comes around. Blackfield was a very fun show. A lot simpler and popier than PT but still good stuff. I'm itching for a new PT album, maybe this year, we'll have to see. The PT show at Radio City a few years ago was one of the best shows I've ever been to.
  • i love them!!!
"...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".
    "..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”
  • I'm a little late to this thread, but I just want to add that.. Porcupine Tree is among the top-five bands of today's progressive rock scene. The Pink Floyd influence is very obvious on some of their first few albums (The Sky Moves Sideways and Up the Downstair), but also on "Time Flies" from The Incident album. Lightbulb Sun is to this day my favorite PT album. It's got a unique and special feel to it. "Hate Song" is highly recommended!

"Grace for Drowning" (the Steven Wilson solo album from last year) was among the three best albums of last year, and I'm really looking forward to see him live later this year. PT and SW live are something very special.

Every PT release is very different so there's something for everyone.. There's even a song that mentions Pearl Jam... ;)

A friend of mine gave me the album Fear of a blank planet to listen to. After a few listens front to back I think it's an incredible album! Now can't wait to listen to the rest of their back catalogue.

Oh...you have no idea. If you're looking for somewhere to start, Stupid Dream and In Absentia are my favorites. You have a lot of awesome in front of you.
