For those who don't know them or are not really sure what they are all about:

Yeah, sometimes the lyrics lose me a little bit, but the band is awesome. Musically they're like Tool meets Radiohead meets Rush meets Pink Floyd. This video (part 1 of 2) is a great example of how tight and powerful they are, especially live. If you are a big drum fan, watch their drummer in this..his beats and mini fills all over the place are out of control.

I don't find his voice to be irritating at all (nor do I find Peter Gabriel's voice annoying). It's pretty standard, in my mind.

After listening to the three links above, I'm going to have to go exploring. This stuff is great. Thanks for the heads up. I think I'll look around their studio stuff first though before I venture back into their live stuff.
ASBNH is probably my favorite PT song.

Spacy doesn't equal Pink Floyd or Radiohead
Heavy with progressive tendencies doesn't equal Tool or Rush
They're ok in short spurts, but I don't find it very satisfying.
I don't agree with the Radiohead or for the most part, Floyd either but I do think there is a lot of Tool in there (in the heavy songs anyways) and I don't know enough about Rush to comment. I do think it has a prog-rock, APC feel to it, I like it. I'm going to look into them a bit more for sure.
I was going to go with Wham meets Metallica meets Jackyl meets Flock of Seagulls, but I couldn't quite pull it all together.

I just got interested in these guys a few weeks ago, and I would say his voice is neither irritating nor inspiring... well, sometimes it does work pretty well, depending on the song. I definitely caught a Peter Gabriel-esque feel to it too. Instrumentally, they are a force, and they seem to understand that this is their strength.
Grace For Drowning is ok. It's very experimental with a lot of 70's prog in there. I was hoping I would love the album but I don't. I do wish I saw the tour for this album in November but I missed it. I always try to catch Steven Wilson when he comes around. Blackfield was a very fun show. A lot simpler and popier than PT but still good stuff. I'm itching for a new PT album, maybe this year, we'll have to see. The PT show at Radio City a few years ago was one of the best shows I've ever been to.

"Grace for Drowning" (the Steven Wilson solo album from last year) was among the three best albums of last year, and I'm really looking forward to see him live later this year. PT and SW live are something very special.
Every PT release is very different so there's something for everyone.. There's even a song that mentions Pearl Jam...

Oh...you have no idea. If you're looking for somewhere to start, Stupid Dream and In Absentia are my favorites. You have a lot of awesome in front of you.
Cheers, I will have a listen now
