Sorry if this has been posted already. I have just now seen it. I hope Chris and the gang did not sign off on this. Black Hole Sun by D'Angelo

I want to throw up, its that god awful. I used to think his stuff was OK back in the day. Not a good way to make a comeback.

Site updated. He recorded it 8 years ago and it will not be on his next album. That makes me feel a little better but he still F'ed it up bad. That is why most recording artists don't mix music, they just sing and play. He even did that wrong in this case.

You're joking, right? D'Angelo is one of the most admired and respected songwriters and producers in modern R&B history. He plays just about every instrument on each of his studio albums. His debut album virtually spawned the entire neo-soul genre. Dude has earned the right to cover any song on this planet he chooses to cover.

I don't think SG could actually put a stop to it if they are credited and receive the due royalties.

I think it gets hairy when the artist covering wants a share of the royalties b/c of changes made to the song.
  • Wow, that was terrible. I think Alvin and the Chipmunks could have done a better job then that.

No, not joking. Don't care if he plays every instrument known to man. THAT mix blows ass in every shape, way and form. He did not earn any right to cover anything. He is an OK artist, at best, never to be compared to someone who has the right to cover anything they want. I don't know where you heard that he is the most respected, there are far better producers, artists, and songwriters in R&B (which isn't neo-soul)

I realize Soundgarden has no say in the matter. It should have just never been done. Even if it was his own song it is horrible. Like I said I had no problem with him before.

Ok artist at best? That's one of the most laughable things I've ever read on this board. If you honestly don't believe he is one of the most respected songwriters and producers in modern R&B history, I've got to seriously question your comprehension skills. And not once did I say neo-soul was the same thing as R&B, but if you don't think neo-soul is a genre which was spawned from R&B...well, we've already established where your comprehension skills are.

But based on your logic, after hearing Ed mumble his way through "Creep" from the Birdman Sessions it must be safe to conclude he's obviously a hack who has no right being anywhere near a Radiohead song.

Open your mind. It might make you a less bitter person.
  • his voice is of grandeur. i don't like the shit he does, but it should be said that he's a talented musician. i won't watch the black hole sun cover link that was posted. i don't like cover songs, of anyone, from anyone (unless my band is covering PJ). that being said, dude has enough clout to cover who he wants.

Wow, talk about bitter. I have read some more ridiculous shit on here than me saying D'Angelo is OK. I never said he sucked or had no talent. He does, he's just not one of the best. Mumbling and electronically speeding up your voice are two totally different things. So my logic has nothing to do with it. It's my ears, that song sucks ass. I honestly don't believe he is one of the best. Maybe one of the best neo-soul artists, but not one of the best R&B artists.

I wasn't too keen on D'Angelo's cover, but along those same lines, this cover amazed me.

I'll give you his voice is great, on that track you cant hear it. He still doesn't have the right to cover whoever. Come on, no artist can cover who ever they want. He is talented but so are a lot of people. Ben Harper plays all his own instruments on his LPs and on stage. I would have dug it if he actually sang the damn song. This post was to say that cover sucked not him.

your clarification is beautiful brother. thank you for mentioning that its the cover that's you main bitch. i do not disagree, although i've not heard or seen it. clearly, the dude ain't rock. so yea, i can agree with you that it wasn't him as much as it was the cover that sucked. still, let us not disqualify the dude entirely.props to your counterpoint involving Mr. Harper. the man is a genius.

That was painful on my ears! It doesn't even sound anything like black hole sun and his voice is annoying.

he hasn't had anything new in 12-13yrs..wasted his talent getting arrested constantly. apparently this track was recorded 6-7yrs ago.

Soundgarden is Pearl Jam related is it not? Just thought I'd share something I found like so many of us do. Didn't think it would get that heated. I am sorry. Won't happen again.

    how bout this:
Ozzie Guillen is the former manager of the White Sox. He now manages the Miami Marlins. Would it make sense to post miami marlins stories on a chicago white sox message board?

Wow, some people have nothing better to do but waste time reposting what others do and make it bigger. People post related things all the damn time. Matt is actually touring with them still. So its not the same as if they had no ties anymore. You don't like it leave it alone. Don't be mad at me because nobody wanted to pay 20 bucks for your rock band code.

It wasn't about D'Angelo it was his cover of Soundgarden.

    Enough
See I can do it too. If you don't like this post then move on.
