The Stockholm PJ tourist guide

Hello folks
So happy PJ is coming to my home town, and also hope that as many as you as possible make it to Stockholm! Mid July Stockholm can be one of the best cities in the world!
So here are a couple of good to knows:
---Currency---
Swedish Krona (SEK or Kr)
Compared to Euro: Divide by 10 (or if youre good at math, its actually 9 something) to get amount
Compared to US Dollar: Divide by 7 to get amount
Compared to GBP: Divide by 10 (or if youre good at math, its actually 11 something) to get the amount
---Airport---
There are two:
-Arlanda http://www.arlanda.se/en/
-Skavsta http://www.skavsta.se/en/
Choose Arlanda if you dont get a MUCH better price on the tickets, Skavsta is a boring bus ride about 1.5 hrs from Stockholm.
---To/From airport---
-Arlanda
--Airport train. Its awesome, only 20 min from Stockholm central station. Its fast and not crowded. But its expensive return ticket is 490kr (~50 Euro). You buy ticket in machines before you get on the trains, its easy
They also leave like every 15 min. http://www.arlandaexpress.com/fares.aspx
--Airport bus. From Arlanda this is not that bad, I would say its a 45 min ride. Tickets are 200 kr for a return to/from Arlanda (~20 Euro) http://www.flygbussarna.se/?lang=EN
-Skavsta
--Airport bus. This sucks if youre not on a tight budget, its a 1hr 20 min ride. Tickets are 259 kr for a return to/from Skavsta (~25 Euro) http://www.flygbussarna.se/?lang=EN
Regardless of what you choose you will end upp at Stockholm central station (centralstationen). There is also a subway station here called T-centralen.
---Local transport---
-Stockholm is a big city, but still very walkable, so walk whenever you can. For those who dont want to walk the subway is really conveniant. Tickets are:
24 hours 115kr
72 hours 230kr
7 days 300kr
Can be bought at the Stockholm central station where you get off all the airport buses/trains.
An alternative is to walk and only use the subway when absolutely necessary, then you can buy sms tickets by texting HA to 72150. Its like 30 kr and is for one trip regardless of how long.
http://sl.se/en/Visitor/
---Venue---
Ericsson Globe Arena
Its a 15 min subway ride from the T-centralen subway station (central station). It has its own subway station called "Globen". Btw, Globen is what everyone calls the place, no one says Ericsson Globe Arena
Get there by taking the subway green line towards "Hagsätra" (as long as you dont for whatever reason stay far outside the city in which case you would take the subway towards "T-centralen", but you wouldnt want to do that!).
Venue for sports events take 13850, I was there yesterday btw watching hockey
Important, I wouldnt live close to the arena, not that its dangerous or anything, but not a very nice part of the city!
---Hotels/Hostels---
For all you who are doing a lot of travelling and are short on cash I would recommend the hostel Af Chapman. Its a beautiful old ship theyve made into a hostel, its situated in a beautiful part of Stockholm and still within walking distance of bars, pubs, shopping, subway to venue etc. This is where I would stay if I visited Stockholm.
http://www.hostelworld.com/hosteldetails.php/STF-IYHF-af-Chapman/Stockholm/32555?source=googleadwordshostelsbynamebroad&kid=477835&aid=2&gclid=CPXsro-SmK0CFWwumAod1gl15Q
When it comes to hotels I would have to go more on the general reputation and location than anything else (its not like I stay in hotels in my home town
)
- Clarion Stockholm. This is just two stops from the venue, its a big modern hotel, close to subway and bars and stuff as well. http://www.clarionstockholm.com/startpage
Besides that hotel I can more recommend areas in Stockholm where its nice to stay...Södermalm is nice and close to most things I recommended, Kungsholmen, Östermalm and Vasastan are all nice as well. But if I would recommend any area I would say check for hotels in Södermalm. Dont take the closes hotel to the central station...
---Restaurants---
Depends on what you like and your budget of course. Some of my favorite places are:
- Soldagen Svejk. Its actually Czech food and beers, both food and beer i awesome, not too pricy. Can be crowded though. http://www.svejk.se/index_en.html
- Östermalmshallen. If you want a typical Swedish lunch I would go here. Its Stockholms best indoor food hall, usually very pricy, but you can get realy good traditional Swedish food here for not too much money. Just had some really tasty meatballs there today, was about 100 kr (10 Euro). Nice environment as well. http://www.ostermalmshallen.se/en/about-us/
- Strömmingsvagnen. This is a van/booth that sell traditional Swedish fried fish with mashed potatoes, you get it on a plate to go. I get hungry just thinking about it. Cheap compared to real restaurants. Take the subway to Slussen and youll find it on the square there called Södermalmstorg. You shouldnt miss it. Great if youre just strolling around enjoying the weather. http://www.alltomstockholm.se/restaurangbar/article33477.aos (I know, its in Swedish, but theres a picture as well)
---Pubs/Bars/Other---
- Gondolen. This place is famous for its cocktails and its view. Really cool place located at subway station Slussen (50 meters from the place where you would get the tasty fried fish). You can eat here as well, but I would stick to the barhttp://www.eriks.se/start.asp?lang=2
- Mosebacketerassen. In summer this is a great place to have a beer with a really nice view over Stockholm
- Götgatan. This is actually a street, but on here there are lots of restaurants, pubs and bars. Take subway to Slussen and walk. The pubs/bars/restaurants on this street arent very expensive and more relaxed and is recommended if your not too much into the more trendy bars.
- Morfar Ginko. This is a cool bar (its actually two bars next to each other, you can walk between). Not too pricey, I go here a lot! http://www.morfarginko.se/bilder
- Skinnarviksberget. This is actually a "mountain" where you can go in the summer, aswesome view of the city. If the weather is nice and you want to save cash, buy your bears/wine in Systembolaget and go here, relax, enjoy the view and weather and get a bit drunk. You wont regret it!!
Pubs/bars usually close at 1 am, there are night clubs that are open to 3 or 5 am.
---Touristy stuff---
- Gamla stan. Aka The old town. This is nice to walk around and see lots of old cool buildings and streets. I would definitely go here, but stay away from restaurants here! And you wont be the only tourist here, recommended to take a detour of from the main streets. Its not big, and its an island, so you wont get lost
---Systembolaget---
Wtf is this you ask yourself?! Systembolaget is the only store you can buy alcohol in Sweden (besides restaurants/pubs of course). So if you want to buy something to enjoy in the sun outdoors, you need to buy it here. Note that it usually closes at 7 pm on weekdays, 3 pm on Saturdays and its closed on Sundays. Youll find several of these in Stockholm, usually the closest one wont be more than a 10 min walk away.
Also, I would say that the longest walk between any two things Ive recommended wouldnt be more than 30 min.
Enjoy your stay, any fellow Stockolm friends here can add thier share of tips as well!!
Cheers
Martin

We have a reservation at a hotel as close as possible to T-Centralen but I might reconsider it: I've read many nice reviews of the Södermalm area elsewhere and now you've just confirmed that.

Stockholm-Copenhagen i would first check cheap flights, but otherwise train is nice. Go to http://Www.sj.se for train tickets. Its probably 5 hrs or something. Train tickets prices can vary a lot, can be really cheap or more expensive than flying, and only god knows the logic behind the tickets prices, so check different departures to get the cheapest

if I don't get into my stupid conference, I'll probably fly into stockholm right on the 5th so I can sightsee properly.
It's fabulous for those traveling there and who want to take a look around!
Especially for those of us who've never even been overseas :(
This will be a godsend for us.
Much love to you
Still looking for 2 tickets to the Stockholm show.Either a pair together or 2 singles.
Just trying to get in the door.
Website wouldn't accept our American Visa Card :(
So if you know of anyone that can put our minds at ease, please send em our way!
Thanks and Happy New Year!
This one is on Kungsholmen, close to one of Stockholms biggest parks

This one is really centrally located, prob expensive. The area around the hotel isnt that fun, but a short walk will get you to lots of cool places.

see ya!
Coming here all the way from NZ, thats awesome! The meatballs place is good for a quick lunch, if youre looking for more of a restaurant for dinner, this is the place many consider have the best meatballs:
Restaurant: Prinsen, its in central Stockholm, warning, it can be pricey, but meatballs would be on the cheaper end on the menu. But youll prob pay 15-20 Euro for a meatball dish. This restaurants is one of Stockholms real classic ones. Address: Mäster Samuelsgatan 4
Pelican that you mentioned is a beer hall, ate there not too long ago, its cheaper than the one I mentioned, and the food is good! Meatballs here are recommended as well!
So now you got three really good meatball options

SMELL YER MA!
I usually use flybe.com when booking flights between Sthlm and Copenhagen. They fly from Bromma and it's actually closer to Sthlm city (8km) than Arlanda, which is the major airport (35km) . There are buses going from Stockholm Central to Bromma and it's only a 20 minute ride. I wouldn't recommend taking the train during the summer time as they tend to be crowded and more expensive than flying.
