charities that don't rip us off and waste our money?

Some charities have been ratted out on another post and I'm all for calling them on that buuuuuuuuut, since this is supposed to be the time of giving and peace on earth and like that there, I propose this be a thread in which to mention some charities, and social and environmental organizations that aren't making crocks more rich but rather are making more rich the lives of fellow humans and critters, trees and plants and all things good.

Anyone game?

    SUPPORT

Values such as the wildlife and the natural environment cannot be purchased. However the destruction of biotopes, the annihilation of natural environment and the extinction of wild fauna species cost expensively. As large carnivores and their habitat are under constant threat, ARCTUROS continues its involvement in issues of management and protection of wildlife and the natural environment.

The efforts of ARCTUROS are supported by the European Union, the State, non-governmental organisations with relevant interests, institutions and private companies. However the greatest assistance emanates from citizens that contribute in the realization of ARCTUROS' plans and support the work economically, morally but also with the offer of voluntary work. Today ARCTUROS is being assisted by supporters from all over the country. Without their aid, the Greek nature would be poorer. With the support of citizens and the conviction that only the collective efforts yield essential changes, we continue the common effort for a better environment. Public support is crucial and there are many ways in which you can help us continue our work. If you would like to contribute to ARCTUROS' efforts you can:

    1) Become members/supporters
    2) Offer your services for voluntary work
    3) Visit the ARCTUROS' Environmental Centre
    4) Adopt a bear from the bear sanctuary or a wolf from the wolf sanctuary (this money covers part of the expenses for the diet and care of the bear you select)
    5) Buy gifts from the commemorative objects of ARCTUROS
    6) Give a donation
    7) Spread the work about ARCTUROS and our efforts to your friends and family
8)Write to us with ideas that you have that can help our work

I'd be weary of worldvision. There has been negative press over the past three years or so regarding this organization. Do an internet search re: 'world vision scam' .

    Here's one of my favorites:

Wildlands Network is urgently restoring, protecting and connecting our best wild places throughout North America because people need nature, and nature needs space to survive.

By connecting our biggest parks and healthiest conservation lands, we create Wildways©, landscapes large enough to sustain wildlife for the long-term.

Looks like bashing charities is far more popular here on AET than saying good things about the good ones. And that doesn't even touch what it would be like on AMT. I'm bummed, people. :(

Bashing anything is much more popular than praising anything, I've noticed. :(

I support to some local charities, one that benefits those with Down syndrome and one that benefits those in need for clothing and food locally.

Yes, it can really be hard to remain positive in this jaded and all too often cynical world.

What do you think of Sierra Club Brian? I used to be a member, but I wonder, with their material incentives to join, in their not what I think they are...

Oh- that's a tough one. The Sierra Club is one of the oldest and most active of environmental. I was a member for several years during the 80's and part of the 90's. I think they deserve a lot of credit for laying the ground work for many big accomplishments throughout their history so for that reason (and to abide with my own wish for this not to be a bashing thread) I would not disparage that organization but I gave up my membership several years ago now.

My criteria for supporting environmental groups goes beyond what a particular organization says they want to do to how true they are to those words. If I send an organization a donation and they send me back thick glossy magazines, day packs, coffee mugs, calendars, greeting cards, note pads, frequent requests for money (in bulk mailings that consume great amounts of paper) and so forth, I begin to question how well they are using those dollars and how effective that group is in terms of conservation and energy reduction.

I think you can pretty easily read between the paragraphs but I would, again, state that I respect the important historical work of the Sierra Club.
