I bought the book three weeks ago, but I knew I could not afford to even begin it before the end of the semester. After finals, and in need for a little PJ energy in the wake of the Euro tickets debacle (apologies to everyone in the PJ camp for my rage on this board), I finally tackled it. As predicted, it's been a near-full immersion for the last three days. I grade a little, work on next semester's syllabus a little, and read one chapter.

I think I like it better than the movie. It is a real treasure. Multiple times I have laughed out loud and had my heart warmed up. Thank you for this wonderful gift. I thought perhaps we could share here our favorite bits. I doubt it will be copyright infringement if we keep them brief and type them out. As an academic, I do it all the time :)

"2010: July 4.
Dave Grohl: When Pearl Jam released their last record, there was an article in a UK magazine that talked about how Kurt didn't like them, like it still mattered. Like, who fucking cares whether Kurt liked Pearl Jam or not? It made me really upset, because Kurt's not around to defend himself, but also because that was considered a stamp of approval; that one person's opinion would matter that much. The next interview I did, I really stuck up for Pearl Jam. If there's one thing at the end of the day that will destroy music, it's guilt. That guilt that some musicians feel that keeps them from making music, any kind of music - that you could let something so petty get in the way of making something beautiful. It really affected me, because the last time I watched Pearl Jam, I sat on the side of the stage and cried, because I thought, Wow, man. These guys survived. They fucking survived! Out of everybody else, they're still fucking going. It made me really happy. I texted Eddie later on to tell him that it was an emotional moment for me. They survived, and they survived without the guilt and the shame. They survived on music."

For all of us mourning the fact that we missed out on the DVD limited edition, please know that there is so much wealth in this book readily available for us!
... and the will to show I will always be better than before.
