Hey guys my buddy and i are traveling over from the US for these three shows. Amsterdam is not a problem but wanted to see what the smartest way to get from the Amsterdam to the Belgium show is and from Belgium to the France show is. Should we rent a car? Should we train? Are there any hotel or hostel recommendations near the Belgium or France festivals? Also I have never been to Europe before are there border checks crossing from country to country? Is it tough to bring "stuff" from Amsterdam to the other two festivals?

Any advice would be appreciated...
Louie

  • I'm in your exact same boat, so while I have no advice to offer, I'll be keeping an eye on this thread. I think we're going to purchase a 3-country (3-day) Eurail pass as our means of traveling. Here's the website: http://www.eurail.com/eurail-passes. Keep me posted with your plans. I'm sure we'll end up crossing paths!

The 'axis' Amsterdam / North of France is well known by the French police & customs.
You certainly don't want to fly with 'stuff' :o and if you choose to drive, know that you car can be searched at random, and the driver can also be tested for alcohol and 'stuff' at random. Just so you know ;) .
  • So would it be better to take the train to bring "stuff" ?

I didn't mention the train only because I'm less familiar with crossing borders by train ... The rest, I know well because part of my job is to defend people that took the chance :P

traveled by train through Belgium, Netherlands and Germany last year with "stuff".
beware that while there aren't really any borders anymore, officials will occasionally still board a train and ask to look at your passport and ask a few basic questions (where are you going, why, for how long, etc).

this happened when i took a train after the Nijmegen show to Berlin. at the German border, the train stopped and some customs agents came aboard.
they didn't check my bag, and as long as you play it cool, you should be ok.
