if I had a job and didn't have to worry about how to make the holidays not so sucky then it wouldn't suck. But I don't so it does.
The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.

  • Christmas is a sad time for me. We could afford a tree , but did not have any money for ornaments.
Grandpa came over . He sneezed. Then at least we had some tinsel.

It sucks because we have to have money to spend on gifts. Take the money aspect out of it, and maybe Christmas wouldn't suck. But shopping and money will always be synonymous with Christmas. Which makes it suck.

The Grinches I know get uptight about trying to shop for people ... very pressured.
    It is overwhelming for them.

They have the money but maybe think they can't pick the right thing
then it comes off as bah humbug towards the whole season.

But shopping is not Christmas. Does not have to be. Giving is Christmas.
Loving is Christmas. Being kind to others forgiving and generous.
    That is Christmas Spirit.

Everyone can do that with or without spending money.

Maybe a handmade card with a loving thought, a sincere compliment, a smile, offering to help
with a chore, baking something homemade, inviting someone into your home.

Most important is just being ... just breathing together at Christmastime....
taking the time to appreciate just that
    each other.

    That is lovely :)

I feel like I can fit in both threads, this Christmas is bittersweet for me. I go from decorating and having fun picking out gifts to just wanting it to be over with.

I agree it's not about spending money, just being together is what matters!

you are right. Sometimes to me it seems like it is two holidays - one that is getting ready with decorations, shopping for presents, guilt from family - all very stressful. The other is taking time to be thankful, being generous to others, being with the people we care about. It feels like it is so difficult getting through the first part to get to the second part.

When I wrote this I thought of you and had a last line of loss that I erased...
you are very much in my thoughts.

I know the most healing the most happiness for you this year,
will be just quiet with your thoughts, your memories
and with those who are missing your Mother as you are.

    It hurts...
your bond with your family grows even stronger this Christmastime.
    This your Mama would love.

Yesterday I got together with some friends in Carmel, they were visiting there so we all met up for lunch. She made me this beautiful necklace that has my mom's name written out in morse code (using gold beads). It was so thoughtful and touching. So it is things like that that I'll look to for light for the holidays for sure.

My mom adored Christmas, so I'm trying to keep that in mind whenever I feel grinchy lol

Thanks for the kindness and wise words. It means a lot to me, and they're appreciated.
