Soul searching and guitars...

Long shot I know, but was just wondering if there was any one out in the Sydney area who might be willing to teach me guitar or bass? I'm a bit of a lost soul at the moment and am really looking for nice company and tick this off from the 'I always wished' list :)
Take care

    I play almost every day.
    Self taught.
But cannot sing and I don't think my lyrics are good.
After a shit day, especially in the office it relaxes you.

    Thanks for the encouragement

I hardly relied on others, I had some quick tips from two guitar playing mates, nothing in depth.
I relied on tabs/chords websites and youtube.
As well as playing along to cd's.

    Not long, a few months.
I remember when I first got the guitar I struggled with a simple power chord but my mate helped me and I was fine.
I started playing punk rock songs, easy to learn.
Now I am playing different styles, focusing on Soundgarden at the moment.
I am no maestro, can't solo much, more a ryhthm player.

That's pretty good :) I'm not sure I could pick it up that quickly

Can you list off some songs that might be easy to learn as a start?
  • Yellow Submarine From the Beatles
just try to find a song you really like
nothing to difficult but a good place to start is down abey road
The Beatles have a great way of making it seem simple, but they got some really heavy songs too.
    I would start there
one other thing learn the songs complete all the way thru!
2 many kats these days only know half of every song don't move
on to another until u have that first one instilled in your brain
that will help you out in the long run
    Take care!!
    until next time......

I started with Ramones and Green Day songs.
And then moved to Nirvana songs.
Pretty much any punk rock song.

I struggle with humming and playing.
I wish I could make my mind be able to do both at the same time.

hmm this is interesting.... i find humming helps.. its accompaniment ... its like when you sing, visualising words in your head when you have to remember lyrics.

It's crazy how if you try to sing along while playing, suddenly the song becomes 10x harder to play.

I'm starting casual bass lessons, and Ramones tunes are on the agenda. They're easy to learn.

those tunes will be good for teaching you rhythm and how to play with a drummer. the two most important things for a bass player.

The thing I get so confused about is that I can read music and (used to) play piano, but the notes on a guitar are so confusing to me. They're completely different!

they are not linear like a piano keyboard. once you learn the string names it is easy to go up the fretboard and know what they are. each string is like it's own little keyboard. the notes are all in order. now figuring out chord names is what throws me...in band practice somone will say "what chord is that???" and i hold up my guitar neck and show them and i am like "i am doing this shape on the A string at 7th fret..."

    It becomes impossible, so true.
I admire those that can sing and play.
