I wanted to paint my HSS Mexican Strat "7-up" Green like the Eric Clapton Strat signature. Not really too sure if I should mess with it because its sunburst, even though its a dime a dozen Mexican Strat. What do you guys think, paint it or leave it alone?

Thanks!

    Go for it
  • do what you want to do man. i have never seen one that color so it would definitely be a conversation starter at your shows. i think it looks really cool.

maybe paint it with some nitro and relic it up a bit? if i were to paint a guitar i would do that.

  • Do it up man have fun with it. Paint it anything but red, just cause i hate red guitars!! lol. its just a MIM strat. there cheap to replace if for some reason you do fuck it up beyond repair.

Paint it the solid colour over the sunburst. Just rough up the current finish with relatively fine sandpaper and use that as the base coat. As it wears the sunburst will show through a la the $$$$ custom shop relics.

Thanks for the feed back! I'm going to have it painted by a friend of mine who paints cars, he said the same thing and just paint over the sunburst after a quick sanding then clearcoat it. I was just worried that in 50 years from now I'm going to kick myself for painting over it, but I guess it would be different if it was American made or something rare.

I will post pics in a couple of months.

Good call! It's a Mexican HSS strat, a great guitar, but probably not something that'll hold value.

    Do it up man!

  • It's been a few months. Where is it? I bet your friend realized how thick that clearcoat actually was huh? Completely ruins the tone of a guitar.

I got the guitar taken apart, going to drop off the body hopefully this weekend. Its funny about the original coat because as soon as I took the neck off, I realized the paint was separating from the body at the neck cavity. So I started to peel it back a little and what do you know, was able to peel most of the paint from the back side with out any trouble what so ever, want to finish removing all the paint before he gets it, and yes its a pretty thick coat of paint and clearcoat. Honestly it will be a couple of months before its finished. I will post pics as soon as its done, at least the painted body before assembly.

  • Yeah, I had my classic 60's strat in to get relic'd like mike's and the guy said it was almost impossible to remove just the clear coat. He stripped everything and then put a new 3 tone sunburst finish with nitro before he aged it. It sounds 500 times better now without that clear coat stopping the true tone. I can't wait to see it. Did you match that green? I've seen stone has one now at least he had it at PJ20.
