Does anyone know please, if there are any difference between Once, Alive and Black on RVM (2004 remix) and the redux of Ten?

If there are any differences, what are they and which do you prefer?

They were definitely remixed at different times. I haven't listened to the RVM versions in years, so can't comment on differences.

Why do you need to know?

Aside from the guitar phasing issues on Alive on RVM, I MUCH prefer Once and Black from RVM to the Redux versions. Once is SOOOO clear and tight....andBlack is tweaked just enough to really thicken it up. I wish the Redux release sounded like the RVM remixes.

Was just wondering whether to pick up RVM, considering all the songs are available elsewhere (Singles/Big Fish soundtracks, Lost Dogs, other studio albums).

Therefore the only difference I can see is if it is worth it for the remixed Ten tracks.

It's a small point, but one advantage of the version of Black on RVM is that it is not mixed in with the previous song.

Why Go and Black overlap, so if you listen to Black on Ten (and you are not listening to the album in order) you lose the first note, because it is at the end of Why Go.

Overall I prefer the mix on Redux, but if I'm listening to studio songs on random, it is better to have the RVM version, because on random the Ten version sounds weird missing the first note!

If you're only thinking of getting RVM for the songs off Ten and you have the Redux album, it's not worth it, IMO. Just overall, I don't think RVM has much draw for fans who have all the studio albums and Lost Dogs too.

  • I have all the above mentioned cds and a big point for me is the packaging, the booklets and the artwook. Also on RVM the songs are divided into fast and slow songs, which is an advantage if you´re in a certain mood. Finally RVM serves it purpose as a tour de force through the music of Pearl Jam´s career up to that point in time.

there are differences but they're subtle. in the end, both the redux and rvm sound like shit. stick with the original.

(unless you're listening to them on vinyl).
