so im really into the singer songwriter genre. The classics like dylan, bruce, neil. and then im also a fan of newer artists like damien rice, bright eyes, iron and wine, tallest man on earth. what are some other bands that are good in that tradition? singer songwriters? acoustic guitar music with great lyrics? folk musicians? or even straight up rock but with the emphasis on mindblowing passionate and powerful words/lyrics.

  • I always think Jeff Tweedy first. One of the classics you left off your list is Townes Van Zandt. Steve Earle, Richard Buckner, Jay Farrar, and Richard Thompson are all good.

    This.

Other favourites of mine are Gruff Rhys, Foy Vance and Ryan Adams.

There's also a fella that just got nominated for a Best Folk Album Grammy that's pretty good... can't quite remember his name... plays a mean uke though... :)

I'm also a big fan of Richard Thompson, Townes Van Zandt, and Ryan Adams.

I would add Joni Mitchell, Iris DeMent, Centro-matic/South San Gabriel/Will Johnson, Dar Williams, Songs: Ohia/Magnolia Electric Co./Jason Molina, Bert Jansch, James McMurtry, and John Martyn too.

Gruff Rhys is really good. I like the way he plays with words.

Add in some women to the list. Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch.

Amanda Palmer is lyrically great too, but not folk.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

Most of the people I would've mentioned have been already (Tweedy, John Martyn, Ryan Adams, Townes, Jansch, Gillian Welch, Tim Buckley etc) but I'd like to mention Willy Vlautin (Richmond Fontaine) and this gentleman, who just happens to be a friend of mine :D

Adding Kathleen Edwards (especially her last album, Asking for Flowers) and also Jeffrey Foucault.

For Jeffrey, he's got some great songs up on his website for free:

Download Ghost Repeater, and One Part Love. You won't be disappointed.
