Everywhere I read about the PJ tour I read the same thing "Pearl Jam to Tour the UK and Europe". I know the UK is not politically enclined towards Europe but there is no getting away from it... its IN Europe!!!

This post is not intended to spark a debate about The UK peoples tendencies towards Europe, but I do find it interesting that many people outside Europe appear to think the UK and Europe are separate... its not!

Rant over, thank you.

I hear you! You wouldn't say "PJ to tour France and Europe" or "New York and the US" would you? :D

The other thing that bugs me is when people from outside the UK think that the UK is England. People don't seem to realise that England, Scotland, Wales and N Ireland are separate countries that make up the United Kingdom

  • Ive always believed that meant 'continental europe'. You do hear people from the Uk refer to Europe as 'on the continent'. Thats all I think it is....
  • this has been bothering me so much too lately....so much, in fact, that i'm losing sleep over it...

A lot of Brits don't consider themselves part of Europe. And a lot of Europeans regard Brits as 'The Island Apes'.

    So it goes.

I for one consider myself European. Though a lot of English are very inward looking, xenophobic, and ignorant. A lot of English harbour a hatred of Germans and French without knowing why. And they can't understand it when the Germans, for instance, don't replicate that hatred. Apparently the Germans have a greater rivaly/antagonism with the Dutch.

Anyway, I wouldn't say that England is strictly European. Too many people in England prefer to suck at the teet of America and have no clue about Europe and it's/our history.

Some English are island apes. Some are a bit more worldly.

I can't speak for the Welsh, and Scottish, as I know fuck-all about these countries, and have a only met a handful of their people - Dunkman being one shining example! :)

    Anyway, I'm rambling...

By the way, if you asked any Brit to explain the definition of the U.K, or of Britain, I guarantee that 90% wouldn't be able to answer correctly.

And the Southern Irish hate it when they're described as Brits, principally because they hate the English. Though it does amuse me when I hear them squawking about it - as if it's anything other than a technicality. And as if it's surprising when considering that the British Isles includes Southern Ireland. Yet somehow they expect everyone to know the difference.

It's quite simple really - we rock! :D

Cool post, although I'm not sure if you were referring to just English people or Brítish. There are a lot of British people that have an anti-European leaning, often passed down through the generations so that the current generation probably don't even know why they feel that way.

In general, the Welsh and the Scots don't have a problem with Europe - we're too busy hating England!

As I stated before, it wasn't a political statement it was mearly a factual one. The UK in in Europe... end of.

(nice to see Byrnzie still coming up with unfounded statistics, noting like continuity :D )

i think they say uk and europe as there is more then one uk show...so jusy giving it a little highlight

This is the only reason I could think of.. however I am not sure 2 shows consitute a tour and it still doesn't make sense to differentiate Europe and the UK.

Some people just need to hate other people and that's the bottom line, as far as I can see. I'm from Northern Ireland originally now living in England. And some people will always hate other people just for being different. I believe that until ordinary people start focussing on what they have in common (which is plenty) and forgetting what differences they have, nothing in this world is going to change.

well were not british because we have a completely separate historical celtic culture, its not as much based in hatred of the english, not as much as it used to be anyway, for example i would view northern irish unionists both irish and british.

for example if you look at the language tree english is a germanic language while irish is a completely separate branch of the tree

This may help shed some light on where the U.K stands in relation to Europe:

Looks like Britain may soon find itself pretty well isolated. And once again we have the Conservatives to thank for this Royal clusterfuck.
