Mike Lull's Custom $5300 MSRP Jeff Ament Bass

Posted as news on the 10c site. Couldn't find any post on the main forum about it. A very vaguely titled post in M&G forum.

I don't have a problem with this. I don't really care HOW the guys make money, to be honest, as long as it is done "fairly". If someone has $3300 (or whatever the Lull rep. said it would street for) to shell out on this thing, then good on them.

I'm just curious as to the opinions of any others on WHY Jeff would have opted for a bass in his name at SUCH a high price, given their (former?) championing of low priced fan-related merchandise (remember those "identical to the more expensive import"stickers, etc?) ...

Like I said, I'm not bothered by this. Just a bit confused.
From what I know about REAL gigging musicians, most of them don't have this kind of loot to blow on a bass, and the price seems WAY out of line for the market in general.

Look, i know it's HANDMADE, and I know Mike Lull is awesome (the band has touted his name for YEARS) ... but I was just really confused by this move.

WHO is this marketed to?
The seriously obsessed?
Or those 4-5 studio musicians who are pulling in the loot, and just want to be like, "Blazam, check THIS out! bitches!"
If I was to smile and I held out my hand
If I opened it now would you not understand?

That was possibly the most confusing post I have read on the Pit in months. If I had any clue what you were asking I would give you my $0.02 but I all I can do is scratch my head...

  • It's $5300. Just like every custom shop gibson and Fender.

    Who cares what it cost?

  • If you don't have a problem with it why are you here asking questions? Seems like you are trying to make a point to me.

Seriously who cares? Because in 1995 they took on Ticketmaster are we forever going to hold them to that ideal? That they are some champions of the downtrodden? People change. Get over it.

    Whoa.
    I AM over it.
I was just curious if anyone with more instrument knowledge could clue me in.
I THOUGHT the street price was way high for a bass.
    But maybe i'm wrong.
I was just trying to figure out who the intended market was for this,
since, to me, it seemed to be an above market price.

"If you don't have a problem with it, why are you asking questions?"
lol. jeez. maybe cuz i was curious.

I just wanted thoughts on it.
    I guess consensus is
    a. its a normal price for a good bass.
    b. fuck off for asking.

sorry to offend the easily offended.

i AM still a bit confused by the move though.
I feel like the person who would want a "Jeff Ament" bass would be a fan, not a well-paid musician.
I feel like you would have to be a well-paid musician to afford\justify this thing, and I don't think of those types as wanting an instrument with some other famous guy's name on it.
But I guess now that i think about it, Eddie does spring for those PT guitars.
So maybe it was a smart move.
    ?

i COMPLETELY understand that the VALUE is there.
I was just wondering why Jeff opted to put his name on something so expensive.
Not because i'm offended by it, but because, as a BUSINESS move, it seemed odd to me.
Like i said, i don't see a whole lot of serious musicians wanting to spend $3500 to say, "hey look, i'm just like Jeff Ament". But I could be wrong.

I would have figured, he'd make a $700-$1000 bass and sell them to a bunch of fans for christmas.
I guess that just wasn't how he wanted to go.
Like i SAID, whatever. I'm not mad about it. Just curious.

Here is a pre-emptive "fuck you" to all the other assholes who come in to this thread with the intention of berating me for asking an honest, NON-confrontational question".

So sue me, kat. lock, ban, delete, whatever.
    some real dicks on here.

It may also have something to do with the fact that they have been friends and working together for 25 years?

But Rickenbacker are hand made, plus they are Rickenbackers lol.

Should've been a signature Hamer bass (8-string or 12). This is the bass that really defines Jeff's impact on the music world, I know he don't use them much anymore, but. That would've interested me because of the uniqueness of these and that unique sound. This bass though is meant to sound like a vintage tone Fender or Gibson. But it's actually neither.

Don't know who this will appeal to. Not me and I'm a working Bass player who plays every week all year round for a living, and spend a lot of money on basses. But the right basses ;)

Not for me, but each to there own. I personally don't get people who want a vintage tone but use copy cat basses. get the real thing.

Although the custom shop Fender will always be worth what you paid for it or not far off, if not more. Plus a Fender sounds like a Fender because it is a Fender, not seething else that emulates sounding like a Fender.

I would guess he opted for such an expensive piece b/c it's a joy to play and the work on it is 2nd to none. That there was never plans to put it up for public sale, but maybe they thought it would be cool to own for a few select fans, while still puttin out a world class instrument that may entice a buyer that's never heard of Jeff Ament.

best materials+best craftsmanship+limited run=big bucks no matter whats for sale
