Awesome show at the SF Filmore Sunday night, Peter Murphy of Bauhaus fame with his latest band. Saw him at a small club, Bottom of the Hill, in June, definitely a tune up tour cause this time around the polish showed.... Was facinating just seeing the difference in six months. Different sets, the new guys learned more of his solo catalogue (Cuts You Up, Deep Ocean) and didn't just play the entire new album they recorded with him.

And some covers, my gawd -- he came out and opened with HURT! F'n powerful and he closed with Ziggy Stardust at 12:20 am. I've seen him 4-5 times (the late 80s are a blur) and NEVER seen him do the song that burst Bauhaus into worldwide fame -- yep, a Bowie cover.

And they played more Bauhaus too - Silent Hedges, Stigmata Martyr, Dark Entry, and a Bela Lugosi's Dead tag on one of his solo tunes. And he stayed "in character" the whole time, he kinda let the facade down in June and chatted with the small audience, last night he was fully in his Prince of Goth role, from the first notes of Hurt to the last chords of Ziggy.

Curious discovery was the co-headliner, She Wants Revenge -- good groove, not a lot of range. But the lead singer did one of my fav rap songs "Bug Powder Dust" remixed on The KD Sessions chill album. I'm standing there grooving to them trying to figure out why they sound familiar, lil Sisters of Mercy, Joy Division, Cure vibe going. Heck, he sounded a bit like Peter! Then I wiki'd them when I got home. - OH! Bug Powder Dust!

And another opening act was a pleasant surprise, I'd seen Michael Shapiro open acoustic before, now he has a bass player and drummer and was rocking. So who the heck was that bass player, he was laying it down! Ah! Mario Cipolina, the original bass player from Huey Lewis and the News! That's what you get here in the Bay Area.

Love finding new music, but hearing tunes from my youth is just a kick. Murphy is still totally doing his thing, reminded me of Billy Mack, the aging rocker from Love Actually played by Bill Nighy (Davy Jones and Rufus Scrimgeour!). I mean here's a 54 year ol' dude hitting the stage at 10:30 and just kicking ass until past midnight.

Go give a listen to one of Murphy's new tunes on "Ninth" - "The Prince & Old Lady Shade" or "Uneven & Brittle," my two favs off his latest album.

Oh he does, no doubt about it. I saw him sing Reptile at one of the final NIN shows at Terminal 5, chained to the ceiling upside down, just a couple years ago.
