It is a sad day.
Shonna's Statement

Hello friends,

Unfortunately, I come to you all with some sad news.

It's time for me to move on to the next great thing, whatever that may be.

I want to thank each and everyone of you, with my whole heart for your overwhelming kindness and support over the years. You are the greatest fans in the world! You really do amaze and inspire me. I can't express how much you all mean to me. Your rock solid encouragement has carried me through, many nights. I have been so lucky to have had the chance to meet and talk with so many of you. Your stories and passion are so incredibly inspirational to me.

I am, without a doubt, not done. I will have a website up and running very soon so that we can keep in touch. I have a whole lot left to say and do, and I can't wait to hear what all of you are up to. This is very difficult, so I'll leave you with this... for now...

Thank you all so much!

Safe travels and Happy Holidays to you all!

See you soon somewhere...

All my love,
Shonna

Gonna miss her..can't help but wonder about their NYE show in DC
i'll trade you my tee shirt for a grilled cheese

Bummer. I was really starting to enjoy her songwriting contributions to the band. She'll be missed.
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

Patterson Hood's Statement About Shonna Leaving the Band

    Y'all:

As word starts to spread, we have to confirm that Shonna Tucker has left Drive-By Truckers.
We all love and respect her and wish her all of the best in everything she sets out for.
Shonna joined the band the last week of 2003 and has played on some of our best recordings.
She logged in over 1000 shows and was also a major part of our records with Bettye LaVette and Booker T. Jones.
Her charm and spark will be irreplaceable and her part in our last decade of this band's history is indisputable.
We will share in our fans missing of her.

DBT does plan to carry on and continue forward.
We have major shows planned for New Years Eve weekend as well as our 40 Watt / Nuci's Space / Athens Homecoming.
We have long been planning on doing less touring in this next year but do intend to begin recording our next album at some point in the not too distant future.

David Barbe will be playing bass in our upcoming shows. He has been part of the DBT family since 2000.

We appreciate our fans and supporters and your caring and concern.
Decisions like this are not made lightly so we ask that you respect all parties in regards to our privacy in this matter. Everyone involved deeply cares for each other.

    Love and Rock,
    Patterson

Not according to his twitter feed:

"No. I'm a terrible bass player. RT @biggamebader: @JasonIsbell any chance your gonna be working with Dbt again since shonna left?"

Bummer that she left. I wasn't a huge fan of her cuts on the recordings (although Where's Eddie is damn good), but she plays a mean bass and more then held her own on stage.

These guys tour like demons though, I'd imagine living on the road that much is tough.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

I knew it was only a matter of time before it came up. It is a bummer, but selfishly I wouldn't mind seeing Isbell playing with them again at some point, even if it isn't a permanent thing.

    Yes... Very jealous! :o

I know they said their not touring as much in 2012 but I just hope they do some shows around Alabama, Tennessee and Louisiana in May when i'm there...

Sad news about Shonna for sure... She was such a cheeky little addition to the band. I was only saying the other day how I thought they had a winning line-up... but it was not to be :(

I wish Shonna all the luck for the future and I hope David Barbe's up to thee job... The gal's left big cowgirl boots to fill...
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

Maybe she will write a cookbook. Those cooking videos she has released are lots of fun.

Rumor has it that she and Neff are quite happy together and that she wants to have a baby. It would be tough to raise a baby on a tour bus so that might be the main reason she left the band.

What better reason? Hope it is something positive like that.

David Barbe on bass for the NYE and Homecoming shows. At least he already knows the songs! Wonder if they might try and get him on board permanently?

Homecoming 2013 is what it's all about though, there's a few of us coming over from England for that, including Sian-of-the-dead and her hubby audiodave!

things that make you go hmmmm...

    #############################################

    http://onlineathens.com/marquee/2012-02-29-0

It’s been three months since bassist Shonna Tucker announced her departure from the Athens-based Drive-By Truckers, and in all that time, she admits no one from the press had asked her why.

“You’re the first person to ask me about this at all,” said Tucker late last week. “Everyone has respected my privacy, but I haven’t asked them to. Nobody’s asked me. All I really want to say is that apparently it was time for me to do something different, and I’ll just leave it at that. I definitely don’t have second thoughts. It wasn’t necessarily the greatest ending, but I feel very good about my decision.”

Tucker spent eight years with the Truckers, appearing on several seminal albums, including “The Dirty South” (2004), “The Big To-Do” (2010) and “Go-Go Boots” (2011), and on Grammy Award-nominated releases by Bettye LaVette and Booker T. Jones.

When she left the band in December, Tucker said on the Truckers’ web site that she was moving on “to the next great thing, whatever that may be.” On Saturday at the 40 Watt, Tucker will play a short set with her new band as part of the Cracker Camper Van Beethoven Camp-In (See Camp-In story on B1).

“It’s going to be a pretty short set — we’re only going to do five or six songs,” said Tucker. “We’ve got a band put together here, and we’re calling ourselves Eye Candy for now. This is a first-time-getting-together sort of thing, and we’ve had a couple of practices and are really having a blast. We’ll see what happens after this.”

She’ll be joined on the bandstand by well-known Athens music figures Clay Leverett (drums) and Bo Bedingfield (guitar), as well as Truckers steel guitarist John Neff. Tucker said she was pumped about her first post-Truckers performance and joked about the abilities and personalities of her collaborators.

“I’m really excited,” she said. “A few days ago, it crossed my mind to get a little stressed about it because it was coming up soon, but later that evening we had a (band) practice, and we walked away from it feeling so good, and we had so much fun that we’ll just take it like that.

“We want to make sure it’s stress-free and really fun. I’m really excited about the new songs, even though I couldn’t have picked a less-talented group of people who are a bummer to be around. It’s just awful.”

In December 2010, Tucker purchased a home in Winterville and said she enjoys country living near the city.

“I’m just loving it out here,” said Tucker, who counts singer-songwriter Dodd Ferrelle as a nearby neighbor and is planning to build a barn for chickens, goals and a donkey. “When I lived in Alabama, I had to drive 10 miles to the closest grocery store. Here, we’re 4 miles from downtown Athens, but it feels like we’re in the middle of nowhere. I love it here in the country.”

Tucker added that she couldn’t think of a better place for her comeback than the 40 Watt, a stage that the Truckers have been on many times.

“I’m also excited to be able to do it at the 40 Watt with the crowd,” she said. “(Talent booker) Velena (Vego) called me up and asked me about it and it kind of took me by surprise. They’ve always been so sweet to me, Velena and (club owner) Barrie (Buck) both. Velena said, ‘Whatever makes you comfortable. You can play as long as you want or as short as you want.’ I thought that was extra-kind of them to do that for me.”

That's surprising that it wasn't wholly her decision to leave (at least that's what's implied).

I'll be seeing them next week with Matt Patton of the Dexateens on Bass. Looking forward to the show regardless.

If you follow her on twitter it's obvious it wasn't a mutual decision.

It's cool to see her and Jason and even his girlfriend tweet at each other.

Also, she and Neff live together. That has to be a little strange for him.

Didn't realize I never posted on the socal shows. Patton did a great job, and was grinning from ear to ear the entire time. More of a rock feel than the last time I saw them. Buttholeville --> State Trooper was great, and getting Aftermath USA back into the set was a big plus.

Did Patterson refer to Aftermath as "Aftermath Revisited" out in Socal too?????

Nope, they just went into it w/ no introduction. Different feel for it. Setlist for my show (3/14) was as follows. While there was a ton of great songs I would have loved to have heard (I've seen every show in town since the Dirty South Tour in '05, and have never heard Living Bubba or People Who Died), it was a totally satisfying show. Girls Who Smoke was great live too.

    1. I Do Believe
    2. Gravity's Gone
    3. Life In The Factory
    4. Marry Me
    5. Lookout Mountain
    6. When The Pin Hits The Shell
    7. (Something's Got To) Give Pretty Soon
    8. Women Without Whiskey
    9. Feb. 14
    10. A Ghost To Most
    11. Aftermath USA
    12. 3 Dimes Down
    13. The Company I Keep
    14. Get Downtown
    15. Sink Hole
    16. Uncle Frank
    17. Go-Go Boots
    18. Birthday Boy
    19. Girls Who Smoke
    20. Where The Devil Don't Stay
    21. Let There Be Rock
    22. Zip City
    23. Buttholeville
