  • Originally had a nosebleed seat but lucked into a floor seat for $50. Incredible show but I prefered the first night, just more of my favorites were played. It felt so short. Totally rocked - I can't wait to see them in my home town Melbourne!!!!

  • I have seen Pearl Jam three out of the four times they have visited our shores and was priviledged to have been at their first Australian show at Eastern Creek in western Sydney in 1994. The Sydney crowd on Wednesday night was really lame and many have commented on this. Interestingly this has been a regular occurrence for the shows that i have been to, unfortunately it was PJ's turn this time. The 2004 Radiohead show was what I call a polite crowd, the 2005 REM show was the same and now the second Sydney show has joined this list. I will admit the sitting down for some of the songs on Wednesday night, due to being 35 and having bad knees. The crowd was not anti PJ I would call them a polite crowd.
I have this strange feeling that Friday Nov 10 U2 show is going to be the same, I will have floor seats for this concert and being 6'5 1/2 it will be difficult for people behind me. There is an element of the crowd that will not stand up during the show, my brother and father experienced the same vibe at the Rolling Stones show this year when some in the crown threw cups at him when he stood up. For a lot of big international bands there does seem to be a population of the audience who just go to say that they have been there, rather than being big fans of the band. I do not honestly believe that there are 80,000 U2 fans in Sydney, or 220,000 fans for the three shows U2 have put on. These numbers do not reflect U2 album sales in for their latest recording
I personally would like to apologise to PJ for the lame crowd on Wednesday night, you guys put on a great show and for us real fans we appreciated it. I think you guys were the victims of the Pretentious Wanker population of Sydney. For those I obeserved standing up and moving around they seemed to be the ones travelling to Western Sydney on the train home.

P.S. WHY DID YOU SELL OUT OF TOUR BOOKS!

You mean the programmes which were $25?

I had a ball at Sydney 1 .. had 10c tickets which were on the floor, so it was crazy.

Going back for more on the 18th.

  • The best part of the show was the age mix of the audience, old fans from the early 1990s and younger fans

Old fans from the 1990's? I guess i'm almost dead, as i've been going to concerts since the late 1970's. HAHAHA. I guess you mean OLD PJ fans since the 1990's?

But was the mix of the audience really the best part of the show?
  • how come there are hardly any posts about the second show compared to the first one?

anyway, I was there, 7 rows from the stage in section B (the middle floor section) so it was quite cool to just be that close.

I thought it was an amazing show, they played really well, great set, a lot of energy ect.

I did'nt think the crowd was that bad for most of the show? Well at the start I felt like there was not many people going crazy for them, which made me feal like a bit of freak as I was, but then everyone seemed to get into it? But maybe that was just the front floor sections...
  • having sat down the front of section twelve for both shows- right against the railing on the first, i reckon its the best vantage point at the venue- it was easy to see crowd paricipation was not as strong the second night, but i think the second gig was way better than the first, simply because i got too hear the guys jam out their new stuff, the old stuff; we've heard it all before, got countless cuts of them from all the bootlegs we've accumulated, but how often are you gonna hear them rock the new stuff? this is the first time we seen them do their avacado thing live, bring on the saturday show! only thing me one teir up from twelve, hope i can jag some floor seats...fifty bucks i'd be in for that!

The songs and performance aside, the highlight is definitely being part of this flag project, in the photo here:

  • I posted a piece that suggested Sydney 2 audiences were lame and they were but also that it was a characteristic of Sydney audiences in general. I can happily say that this was not the case for last nights U2 show. U2 were phenomenal, if you have the opportunity to attend one of their shows do so, it was extraordinary.
For those who attend the concerts and have extensive bootlegs of PJ shows the best option is not to buy them. I don't buy live records as I believe it ruins concerts.
My advice for PJ would be to ignore Sydney completely on the next tour, we deserve it.

Have to agree with whoever said the crowd was polite.
After every song, the whole place erupted with cheering, even though during the song itself most people just stood and listened.

By the way, I saw that Hitchhiker sign also. From what I remember, that section of the crowd rocked hard thru out. Well done!!

  • If you compare set lists from Sydney show 1 to Sydney show 2, the Band should accept some of the blame for the lack of excitement from the crowd. For example, many songs were played from the Vs record, but besides Blood, they were all the slow tempo songs eg. elderly woman, daughter, dissident, indifference. Why not play Animal to get the crowd going? Other negatives about the show were the seated segment, boring guitar solos and the overall short length of the concert.
I thought the show was a wasted opportunity. The Eatsern Creek Pearl Jam show remains one of my all time favourite concerts. The Bands song selection made this concert a dissapointment.
Bands should always play the songs that the fans want to hear. Metallica always play Enter Sandman, Depeche Mode always play Enjoy the Silence and ACDC always play TNT.

AC/DC play the same set every show.

PJ is about variety and unpredictability. It's always been the case, it's not about to change, and it shouldn't.

There is no way that the band and the songs they played the issue night 2. I think it honestly was due to the fact that the die hards were scattered over the place and not concentrated in the front.. i still had the best night ever and rocked my heart out, i dont think pearl jam could ever be blamed due to set list choice, its crazy to even think so.. sorry but thats my opinion

I actually enjoyed the 2nd nights setlist more than the first night, despite the worst crowd in the history of rock! Me and the 3 guys I was sitting with went nuts the whole show. That one part where we got Sad - Whipping - Not For You (Modern Girl) - Present Tense - Down all in a row just kicked my arse!!!!! Throw in the preset, Lowlight and Comeback, and it's looking pretty good to me!
  • Did you guys feel that the security was too strict at the second show in Sydney. The height of ridiculousness was the pouring of water bottles into paper coke cups. My brother and I were moving about and were told by security to try and stay still. This shit does not happen at the entertainment centre in Sydney. Acer Arena is a shit venue.

Hey all this is only the second time I have posted, the first was in reply to Ed apparently saying Brisvegas was a better crowd than Syd. I am a 30yr old mother of 2 who has been a fan for 15 years, I saw Pear Jam once before in Canberra and THAT my friends was a lame crowd. I was in seat 707 in Syd and shattered that the seats were so crap, but I can assure you I sung every song, screamed, jumped up and down (as best I could) and clapped till my hands were raw.

I would kill to go the concert in Syd on 18 Nov, but circumstances beyond my control are preventing me getting back up to Sydney.

Please Sydney go nuts..... We need to redeem ourselves.
  • Personally I thought the main reason why the crowd was the way it was is because the set was so light on for the Ten and Versus crowd - you know, the people who went just to see Alive, Black, Jeremy, etc. I heard calls all night of "play something we all know" (I replied "listen to something after 1995 and you'll know it").

The setlist was the best setlist I've seen from a PJ gig - I mean Not For You, Whipping, Present Tense, Blood, Corduroy, Hail Hail...all fantastic tracks!

Also the venue is so bloody massive that you are not going to get a crowd that feeds back to the band like they would at the EntCent.
  • have to say the set was a little light ie song count which was disappointing. first time i have left a pj gig wanting more. i think it would have to be the first time for a very long time that neither rvm or betterman were played. when ed was asking the crowd to express themselves why not play betterman/rvm/state of love/go anything to get the crowd going. even flow was cool and getting to hear sad and down was awesome.
i think the crowd was full of sydney wankers. i was on stones side first teir and there was a constant stream of people going for a smoke/getting a drink. i mean wtf your at a gig so see the band mfruckers. seeing them in newey on sunday so hope the flanno and burbon crowd dont turn up screaming for jeremy. while its a good song id rather hear others like:-
    state of love and trust
    footsteps
    breath
    man of the hour
come back (was tops wed night!)
    crazy mary
    yellow ledbetter
    rv fruckin mirror
    i got id
    go
    betterman
    rock free world
    given to fly
    love boat captain
    green disease
    save you
    light years!!!!
  • The absolute last thing I want out of a Pearl Jam show is 6 or 7 tracks off Ten. It is far from my favourite album and I'd sooner hear more from Vitalogy/Yield/No Code. Unfortunately the majority of people that go to Pearl Jam shows would love to hear Ten and Versus played and nothing else.

I'd love to see PJ play less of the Ten/Versus stuff so the crowds get smaller and they get to play smaller venues. I'm incredibly envious of people going to the Newcastle show - what a great sized venue to see them play. Acer Arena was rediculously big - no wonder there was no atmosphere.

    (Virginity Lost)

I was with one of my mates Jason for concert 1 in Sydney and as usual at a PJ gig had an awesome night. Was in side viewing, in the second section up and sat thru the first couple of songs, singing loudly and trying to get into it surrounded by lifeless dweebs. Jason and I kept saying "let's stand, you cares about these clowns". Wouldn't you know, the surrounding guys stood for "daughter"...wonderful. After that we refused to sit - forcing those behind to stand - gotta love the domino effect. Couldn't wait for the second show...had seats in the front row of the tiered seating on Stone's side with 15mates....

I made comments to Jason b4 the band came on that the crowd were nowhere near as pumped as nite #1. DTE as first song should surely have got people rocking....the crowd in general were average at best. A couple of dolled-up teens were standing, arms folded for much of the concert and appeared disappointed that the band didnt just play betterman 24 times....

A few of the group i went with said they didnt know all of the songs, that they didnt play Jeremy, or other songs they knew....

    I said, I know...'twas great hey?

I left pearl jam sydney #2 pumped and ready for #3 and in Newcastle.....

On the Friday I saw U2: the rain, the lights, the screens....wat a set up...yet left feeling flat.....If U2 are deemed the worlds biggest band, then clearly Pearl Jam are the best.

PS :We were the guys with the "Eddie we found you a shack" sign. I've offered the boys my parent's place for free...but don't tell my folks, mum doesn't even know about the bedsheet I used for the sign.

You guys got the best setlist and blew it. I bet it was becsue of sydney's reaction that all the Lost Dogs songs were cut from the Brisbane shows. Some of us want to hear the songs we've rarely if ever heard live not just the songs we've heard a hundred times before. Don't turn up if you want to see the same setlist from 1995 played everytime they come here. That way they can play smaller venues and the actual fans will have an even better time.

Yeah, when ed told us its ok to move a friend and i tried to hit up the bottom floor, so we did, but were turned around at the bottom floor door by ticketek security.

We also went to the railing and danced and sang to dissedent, then got told to sit down.

    Not cool

  • I was at the Wednesday gig last week. Eddie made a comment about it not being a Sunday morning and how the crowd should liven up. Also said perhaps the security was too high. I have to say that I felt the security were too tight - it is a rock concert after all! It jsus seemed that security were waiting to berate someone for doing something wrong. All the same, I thought the gig was brilliant and that although it was hard to jump around with the seats in the way PJ pulled it off brilliantly. I was at the Pumpkins last gig in Dublin which was fully seated and in a venue of about 500 people. I thought they failed to pull it off. The crowd never got going and I left disappointed.

PJ pulled it off brilliantly. I have tickets for Saturday's gig and I hope for the fans sake the security can relax a bit. I saw a guy chucked out for dancing in the gangway beside his seat. But the seat is in the way if you want to jump around (just jumping up and down). I hope someone involved in setting up the venue reads this and has a word to the security. Otherwise - PJ you totally rock!!

Someone commented on U2's gig this Monday. I didnt rate that at all. Thought they didnt seem to want to be there. I sincerely hope that this Saturday the security cop themselves on. I've heard that there were security issues in Melbourne too. Pearl Jam please address this for Saturday night.

Cheers and see you all there, hopefully.

    Rob
  • Awesome setlist, i dont think it was so much that the crowd were dull, its that they were, as has been mentioned before, polite, and the guys wanted a more intense atmosphere.

When a concert opens with DTE and half the audience are still sitting down you know theres something wrong.
When hardly anybody sings to Baba at the end of the night, things just go from bad to worse.
Its true that security didnt really help the matter

Still had a great night myself, though
  • Hey there, I had tix for the first two Sydney shows and gave the first night's to my flatmate who was going home to Ireland 3 days later...He said it went off Tuesday night!!
So off I go on Wednesday with my girlfriend and when DTE started up my gf and I started going hysterical..as you do at a PJ gig...Anyhow, the wankers behind us kept yelling at us to sit down and started to grab us etc. I got punched in the head and knocked out by one of the guys and we missed the rest of the gig.. I was fucking livid that these old fuckers behaved like they were at opera and ruined our night..Gutted I missed Eddie telling everyone to liven up, coz we were Alive!!
As for security, they were awesome to us, really helpful and no attitude problems at all so maybe it's a lesson learned for all to liven up and not take ourselves too seriously.

I was first elevated section about halfway up. I had had awesome night. Rocked out and jumped around like a mental case the whole time. The setlist was huge. Seeing I don't care about what songs other people want hear or the popular songs I was a pig in shit, only 7 songs from night one.

Yeah the crowd was lame but it worked to my advantage. Seeing as the two guys sitting next to me were way too cool to seen near me I got a few seats to go off in!

Ed and the band tried so hard to rev up the crowd the only downer was that they might of walked away disappointed with the night. At one stage Ed had enough and started up the old school antics. Eblows in middle fingers up and dancing the Ed jig right around the edge of the stage hair bobbing about giving the crowd the bird. The part timers looked offended and the diehards went mental.

So athough the crowd was lame thanks to the band ( Mike skill and energy is top shelf) I had JUST AS GOOD a night a Sydney one. Maybe for different reasons but don't ask me to choose.
I can't go the library anymore, everyone STINKS!!
