Pearl Jam will be there the first year they're eligible. They're a huge name who will become eligible at a time when there aren't a lot of other big name acts coming up for eligibility and hence will be big TV draw. Beyond that, Ed has ingratiated himself to the committee over the years by repeatedly showing up to induct whomever has asked him to in any given year. The RRHOF is every bit the joke that the Grammys are (bigger in my opinion, but whatever, to each his own), but Ed (and Pearl Jam by extension) has made all the right friends (and all the right moves) to be the next RRHOF darling, and as history has shown, it's as much about who you know as what you've done when it comes to being enshrined.
I defy anyone who studies the selection process and what goes into the actual ceremony and not walk away thinking the whole thing is a sham (not to mention what a joke the whole idea of a Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame is to start with). I cringed when Springsteen, The Clash, Prince, U2, and R.E.M. were all inducted, and I'll cringe when Pearl Jam is as well. I'll always appreciate the Sex Pistols refusal, though. Bless them...
2012 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class DOES NOT include: Heart, Steve Miller Band, Chicago, KISS, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Guess Who, Rush, Journey, The Cars, The Moody Blues, Styx, Yes, ELO, Peter Frampton, Bad Company, Cheap Trick, MC5, Grand Funk Railroad and Boston. But it does have Laura Nyro & Donovan. REALLY?

Donovan is awesome.
Can't believe Chicago is still not in the Hall. The Terry Kath days were some great stuff.
