A Poem

I write a lot of poetry and most of goes unread by anyone other than me. However, I’ve had the urge the last few months to share some of it, so I’m hugely stepping out of my comfort zone and posting this for total strangers to read. Hope you enjoy!

Drive
I don’t intend to make it home tonight,
I’m revving up towards the dawn.
My mirrors are blank, missing the expected darkness;
this haunts me and I push my foot lower,
confused as to whether I’m racing or running.

Desertion is the road that leads me,
I hit the highway with a final push.
Sun rises in my eyes; blinded by the golden glow,
I slow...
a sensation of reverse.

A mirror makes my heart misfire.
I abruptly see the night,
with a star that calls me.

Spinning to a violent stop,
I cower from the sight, scared to look through the glass.
Breathe and wait, breathe and wait.
And with clarity I know,
I’m racing
back towards the black.

First of all, thanks for taking the time to read and comment--means a lot to have someone read my work. I literally have hundreds of poems and not sure what to do with them all. Anyway, here's a couple short ones for you.

    Your Little Bird
    As a little bird
I was caught within your heart,
    a fledgling full of song,
    embraced in harbouring hands,
    coaxed with quiet words
    and touch.
    A gentle golden ring
    lessens my weight--
    a bond of no restraint.
    I fly
    on wings that captured you.

    Misfit
    Sadness piles
    beneath the storm
    as thunder
    roars to life.

    A misfit,
    crying, lost
    upon the
    murder of his wife.

    But neighbourhoods
    of nothing
    catch the tears
    that fall unseen,

    he drowns
    among the shadows,
    as night
    begins to scream.
