Kentucky Church Bans Interracial Marriage

Does a church have the right to ban a member just because they are an interracial couple? Aren't churches supposed to welcome all to their churches or are thy allowed to pick and choose whom they want to attend?

Chikuni, 29, who works at Georgetown College, is black--and Harville, who was baptized at the church but is not an active member, is white. Dean Harville, Stella's father, said he was told by the church's former pastor Melvin Thompson that his daughter and her fiancé were not allowed to sing at the church again. However, Thompson recently stepped down and the church's new pastor, Stacy Stepp, said the couple was once again welcome to sing.

Stepp's decision prompted Thompson to put forth a recommendation saying that while all members are welcome at the church, it does not "condone" interracial marriage, and that any interracial couples would not be received as members or allowed to participate in worship services. The only exception? Funerals.

That's pretty bad, considering the Bible says nothing against interracial marriages in general.

Do they have the right is different than should they have the right.

All I know is a church should lose it's tax-free status if they behave like this.

Ky should ban any and all marriages within the state. This week we take the spotlight off of West Virginia.

wow !! where do you draw the line,I would say that most marriages are interracial my wife is 50%fillipiano and 50% german and am greman norwigen and italian 1/3 each and now my son is a real mix,I don't normally talk trash about any church but the pastor at this church needs to re-think the values and standards he is applying towards the church.

  • Gay marriage is still illegal in most parts of this country and here in NY where it is legal churches have the legal right not to marry couples. So why does any of this surprise any of you? It's fucking Kentucky!!!!

Why should they lose their tax-free status? Fundamentalist churches do this kind of crap a lot. Do you think all churches are marrying gays in states where it's legal?

I think the line is drawn when you don't appear look like one of them no what kind of mix one might be. Sad to see this happening today but it appears this matter might be getting corrected.

Eh, just be careful how you use the term "fundamentalist."

I don't know any fellow Believers who would agree with such a discriminatory marriage policy. A case of personal bias making everybody look bad.

Meh this doesn't bother me that much since a church is pretty much a private organization, that no one really has to join so they can kind of do what they want in this regard. I mean I don't see much difference between this and Catholic churches not allowing women to be priests. I mean if you don’t like the rules of a religion or a church, find a different one, seems simple enough to me.

i am pretty certain that this would not be getting reversed if it were not for the national exposure. this is nearly 2012. this sort of bigotry should be exposed every time.
