So they were selling them before they knew how many they had?

Yup. I think Amazon orders may have the same problem.

No, the record company reduced the allocated amount for every supplier later in the day

  • this morning, i got a call about this from sound stage direct. seth told me that all of the retailers that placed their orders ended up getting about 10% of what they asked for. sound stage direct ended up ordering two shipments from sony: one to fulfill pre-orders, which is why it ended it saying temporarily out of stock, and another one for regular sale.
i have witnessed some performances. i have soaked up a lot of memories.
  • surely they should have waited for confirmation on their orders before they started selling things?

They were told they had an amount allocated - and in the last week that amount was reduced considerably by the supplier

  • that just doesn't make any sense to me.... monkey wrench/ columbia, whoever must have known how many would be printed and known that 10C would sell out... so why would they confirm more than they could ever hope to fill?

They decided to make it more limited after seeing them not selling out? They reduced the amount after the music retailers stuff had gone online, and while they still had items to be bought,

I've yet to receive an email cancelling mine...I ordered a long time ago though.

I was just on the site and they are taking orders still...be pretty shitty to take orders after you know you won't be able to fulfill them, and then cancel them.

why wouldn't they make enough copies to keep retailers happy...it's not like sony or pearl jam will lose and be stuck with all these copies?

  • Received today from SoundStage Direct:

Guy from SoundStage called me personally to explain (which is pretty awesome). Apparently Sony just told retailers yesterday that supply was going to be SUPER restricted after initially telling them it would be unlimited. Seems even the retailers are a bit fed up at this point. Only winners are the ebay bastards. You can't tell me they didn't know demand would be this high, starting to smell like an intentional price gouge by someone.......Sony?

Glad I ordered from 10C as a backup. I was on the fence. :|
  • The way Pearl Jam is handling this release makes NO SENSE AT ALL. Basically they're creating an environment that completely fucks over everyone involved except flippers and eBay jerks.

    What's the point?

My own theory is they want to cultivate the more rabid part of the fan base, so that if you want to get cool stuff you have to be on the ball, bang up to the minute, checking the boards regularly and ready at a stroke to give your money to 10C, or else risk paying 10 or more times the amount on ebay.

This might be for business reasons, it might be to stoke passion and enthusiasm amongst the fan base, it might be to make being an active member of the fan club more appealing and necessary.

Personally I think the approach is exploitative of the huge passion we have for the band - I feel like I'm being 'harvested'. I also feel it's maninpulative, and unkind on the average Pearl Jam fan. For these reasons I have been trying to resist this pull for quite a while, and not to jump through these hoops - but it is difficult - I want to be an active fan, I want to hear great music on vinyl - but I don't want my emotions to be manipulated for profit.......

Interesting theory, but I'd be willing to gamble that it's having the exact opposite effect.

it is likely, let's hope they won't...

  • This happened to me too, but it isn't Soundstagedirect's fault. Amazon, Acoustic Sounds and other vendors also got screwed. Soundstagedirect has always taken care of me and I'll continue to buy my vinyl through them.
