Really. Sometimes though they are oddly and descriptively appropriate.

    I hate record players

edit: in all seriousness trolling is the perfect name for the behavior. It not only describes the act of looking through forum posts slowly to find people to piss off, it also describes perfectly the type of behavior it takes to simply do things that piss people off...fucking troll...fits perfect!!

trolling is a good name for it.

besides, on all ages forums the profane names we would normally call people that piss us off are off limits...

baiting is also a good name for the behavior that some people here exhibit. it is hard to recognize it at times, but it is best to not "step in it."

either way, my philosophys is it is best to avoid people that you feel are trolls and don't validate their behavior with any sort of response. let them have the last word and then the thread dies. most people know when people are trolling so they skip over their posts anyway. if i reply, i reply to something earlier in the thread and skip their post or make a different point to continue the debate.... there is no greater embarrassment on the forum for a troll to post a thread that has 120 views and no replies...

Couldn't have said it better! I figure trolls and baiters are probably just very angry people who are trying to vent in weird way. To be honest, I wish them well-- I just wish they'd find a better way to vent than trying to irritate others. But like gimme said, if you don't buy into it, they go away.

Isn't the origin of the term "trolling" come from fishing and not the monster under the bridge? You know, you drop a line in and drag it along until someone bites it. It pairs well with "baiting", too.

yes exactly. trolling is fishin from a boat as boat is going along slowly. we did this in the columbia river between oregon and washington. we were baiting and trolling all day long. we did not catch a single salmon.

I don't really get the baiting trolling thing cause people have different opinions
we don't agree and that is fine

I was called that once because I had a point to make that was related
but not in the majority but my right to speak. I have found a friend rarely would
call another friend a troll though

now saying something like ... a post is... an inside joke or making fun of another poster,
    in a underhandedly way
that I can see as baiting or trolling because they are trying to be mean and spiteful in a very
immature way ... not being open and honest and forthcoming which everyone deserves.
And also just trying to rile another poster without they themselves getting into trouble.

But it takes all kinds of people and if you are unkind everyone notices that.

I LOVE THE COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE!

Ooops, sorry, different subject. Well, but maybe? Is there a generic name for posters who does not necessarily bait or try to derail a thread, but rather one who tries to change direction mid-Columbia River? Or is that the same thing?
