Time magazine covers

While it's nothing new that the cover stories Time Magazine uses are regional, based on what's going on in each region, the latest covers have drawn quite the stir.

It's not news that Time magazine uses different covers for its different regional editions, but it's only when you gather them all together -- so you can see what Europe and Asia read in Time compared to what Americans read in Time -- that it becomes clear how insular the U.S. edition of Time is.

If you live abroad, the current edition of Time features a dramatic picture of an Arab rebel wearing a gas mask under the headline "Revolution Redux." In America, we got "Why anxiety is good for you":

Yeah, they're keeping in mind their audiences, and they know what sells. But this just makes our country seem like we're living in a bubble (and yes, I know that we are, but come on....)

  • Good one.

On top of appearing insular it shows that we love our fluff!!!! The only one that matches is one about the Clintons.

Every other one except the China one is more about lifestyle than hard issues.

It would be intersting to see what's inside. Are the articles (basically) the same, but the cover is just different? Or are the cover articles of the other versions just completely left out of the US one? If it's the former, than all they are doing is selling magazines, and this is probably much ado about nothing (and more a sad commentary on how the US buys things than anything - is it really that bad if someone bought the magazine for a fluff piece, but then ends up reading up on Afghanistan?). If it's the latter, well.....
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.

Reminds me of Bob Dylan's comment, "You have too much to lose by printing the truth...." I just wish the mainstream media would stop calling what they report "news." I would like to think that using the word "news" construes unbiased reporting to get to the closest approximation of the "truth." Sadly, our mainstream media completely botches the job.
It's nice to be nice to the nice.

I saw this on Facebook and was hoping someone would post it- thanks Jeanwah. Classic head-in-the-sand stuff!
"Pretty cookies, heart squares all around, yeah!"
    -Eddie Vedder, "Smile"

"Try to not spook the horse."
    -Neil Young

in all fairness ... it appears that there really is only 2 versions ... a US one and a foreign one as the covers for the foreign ones all seem to be the same ...

and i don't really think that the US cover issues are totally fluff ...

having said that - i think in general, americans are not so interested in understanding what is going on in the rest of the world ...

A so-called news magazine should be reporting world news. Not what their stupid audience wants to read. Talk about dumbing us down...
