Here's why you may want to wear earplugs to all concerts

I sometimes wear them to even small clubs or movies if the audio is too loud. I don't put them in all the way, but just enough to hear the sound fine but not blast out my ear drums.

I'm guessing he had alot more deep seeded issues other than Tinitus if he chose Stabbing as the way to off himself.

I could see Tinnitus driving someone crazy.. Mine started after firing my rifle without ear protection.. I also have played in bands since I was 15 and I have been to many loud concerts.. but the gun shot is what set it off. Or at least, that is when I started to notice it.. But, it comes and goes.. Which makes me wonder if it is always there and I am most night able to ignore it..

The source of this story is Fox News. Are you sure this man didn't die because the communist, kenyan, socialist President of the United States didn't order a death panel to "put him down"?

Well I always wear earplugs at shows. two times I didn't and hated the rining and muffled speech that followed for a day or two.

For those interested, the spiral shaped rubber earplugs work really well. I got mine at a music shop for 20 bucks. They work better than the foam ones cause, you can choose how much sound you want to block out. The foam ones to me where not that great, cotton was better than those I thought.

I have a friend who has tinitus real bad, and she sleeps with a fan on full blast to drown it out. sounds like a terrible thing.

  • I usually wear earplugs at most shows

Recently I didn't wear them at the Soundgarden show I was at and ironically that was the loudest show I have ever been to! Man they did this feedback thing at the end that literally hurt your eardrums, it sounded like a jet plane was right next to us lol

It was comparable to that opening scene in Back to the Future where Marty strums a chord and flies back because it was so loud

If i went to a concert and had ringing in my ears for the rest of my life, i would want to compensated. And you are right on with the course of action too. Good thinking.

What?? It is a concert!! You know going in it will be loud.. It is your personal responsibility to take the necessary actions to protect your ears.. if you so choose..

  • I've been to nearly 275 concerts and also shot tons of machine guns etc. while serving in the U.S. Infantry. I was a SAW gunner and fired regularly without plugs. My fear was missing a command due to the hearing protection... and that could be deadly. I do have a mild case of tinnitus but nothing over-bearing. For in door concerts, I was wear plus now. I saw Soundgarden play at the PNE forum in Vancouver. Up until that point I'd never used earplugs at a show. My dad had mentioned it in passing that I should from time to time (I guess it made sense, seeing as he's a drummer, and he knew that I liked going to concerts).

Anyways the PNE forum is this old small hockey arena.. holds about 4000 people and the sound quality is crap. Apprently the solution to that is to crank the music as loud possible. I had a hard time hearing after concerts before, but when we got out of that one. Everything sounded like static. I litterally couldn't hear. It took 2 or 3 days for my ears to get to the point where they'd usually be after a concert and about a week to get back to almost normal. I've had mild tinnitus every since (and had my hearing tested once... and its not bad, just not great in higher frequencies). The good thing is I really only notice it when its absolutely quiet. Any kind of background noise keeps it a bay. The world isn't a quiet place, so thats not often :)

Anyways my dad sat me down after that. Even though was 19 at the time. And told me to wear ear plugs to concerts. If I kept that up I wouldn't have any hearing left when I was older. He never really sat me down to be stern about anything, so I took his advice. Only other time I had an incident was metallica in toronto in '98. I forgot to bring plugs. My hearing hurt after that too, but never ever as bad as after Soundgarden in Vancouver.

On a positive note, the Soundgarden show in Vancouver is one of my all time favorites :)
  • I went deaf in one ear for a week after seeing Sepultura when I was a teenager. Got to admit, it was the scariest week of my life. Worn earplugs to every show ever since.
I still notice the ringing when it's dead quiet. Just because the bands onstage are probably deaf doesn't mean they need me to join the club
  • I wear earplugs to just about every show I know I'm going to be on the floor or anywhere near the P.A./speakers.

The loudest show I've ever been to was My Bloody Valentine in Santa Monica a few years back. It was a fairly small venue with concrete floors and walls. The last fifteen minutes was just layered feedback, with insane low end just vibrating the whole place. I had earplugs in, and my ears were fine, but my chest cavity felt like it was going to rupture and even my teeth were vibrating too...just ridiculous!

J Mascis introduced me to tinnitus in 2009 at a Dinosaur Jr show in Tempe. My hearing has been fucked ever since.

I usually have to sleep with some white noise on in the background (noisy fan, television, etc) to cancel out the ringing in my ear. It's not too severe. I only notice it at night when I'm trying to fall asleep. That's when I start panicking.

Ever since, I've been wearing plugs at shows. I can't really imagine what my life would be like if it got worse.

I think more people should use them. Ones like these still let all the frequencies through:

Mike kinda cooked my left ear in the 2000 shows with his delay laden solos. Now, loud music can sound distorted pretty quickly. No ringing, thankfully.

I agree. Like I mentioned before, I can put them in so that I can hear the music or movie fine without being overwhelmed with audio. That Dolby sound in theaters is sometimes ridiculous. Even smaller venues with amps carrying mega-wattage can be a bit daunting. I never got the "if it's too loud, you're too old" saying because if you're too old, wouldn't that usually mean that you are hard of hearing and wouldn't be able to hear regardless????

These are also a GREAT ear plug. I wear them to everyshow and they cut out all the BS frequencies and allow you to continue hearing the music w/o the loss of fidelity.

Why? I'm muffing the sound by a lot but can still hear the audio fine. It's just not blasting my eardrums.

I met a guy at the Montreal show who was wearing earplugs. I didn't really understand why until Mudhoney started. Then it all made sense.

(Not a shot at Mudhoney other than to say they play very, very loud.)

Because, if they aren't inserted properly you are still allowing the dangerous noise levels inside your ear.

Just buy some high quality HF earplugs and insert them all the way. Like the ones previously suggested in this thread.

  • I went to the FooFighters concert in Boston a couple of weeks ago. I reminded myself to get earplugs because I knew that it would be loud (I have never worn them before). Anyway, I forgot and I have never had ringing in my ears like that in my life (two days). The next day it felt like someone was cupping their hands over my ears when I tried to talk.

Anyway, I will never go to another concert again and not bring earplugs. Scary shit and nothing to fool around with...Definately a wake up call for me.

This guy had more issues than getting hearing damage from a concert. He would have to if he was willing to end his life.
  • I have had it in my right ear since a year ago after a night out where there was live music.
It caused me great anxiety for the months that followed but now I've learned to live with it.
Mine comes and goes, when it is bad I can even notice it in a slightly noisy room.
Noone wheres them at bars with music here, you look like a dork if you wear them.
I always where them at concerts now, especially after Bad Religion left them ringing for days.

I have had severe ringing in my ears now since the Buffalo -> 2 MSG shows in '10 (a.k.a. tinnitus), and hardly ever even play my guitar without earplugs, let alone see live music. I can't begin to tell just how much I miss silence.
